Re: dog loosing hair
Kelly, the possibilities are endless....did your vet rule out allergies, stress, mites, pain-associated problems, etc?
If your westie is older than 6, ask your vet to rule out thyroid disfunction and diabetes.

Re: dog loosing hair
the vet checked him for fleas etc thinking he might be allergic but he didnt find any on him!!! he gave me antibiotics to give him and i have to bring him back in a week!!
but when i asked him what it was he said he wasnt sure and the tablets should clear it up!!!
i really hate not knowing whats wrong and am worried that he could pass it on to my cats and other dog!!!

Re: dog loosing hair
It's doubtful that you should be concerned about a contagion.....mange and ringworm are about the most serious types of skin diseases that you should worry about transmitting to your other pets, both of which are easily detectable upon further exam, skin scrape or culture. If your vet felt this was either, he would have proceeded more cautiously and offered other treatment.
If the condition does not resolve after the course of antibiotics, discuss the diet you're feeding, rule out allergies, stress, or injury. Watch his habits carefully and try to discern if he is aggrivating the area himself, if he's biting at his skin, chasing his tail, etc,...this can help you further determine if he is stressed vs a painful injury, etc. If it worsens during this course of antibiotics, don't hesitate to get your dog back in for a re-check.

i have noticed that is seems to be forming a scab now and seems to be healing!! my dad thought that maybe he was doing it squeezing under the fence!! it could be possible but i have never seen him do it and didnt think he would ever get through there but my big cat oscar who is massive went through it the other day!!
and when standing beside the westie is actually believe it or not a good bit bigger!!
