usually when the symptons show up the problem is serious..straining to urinate is usually the first, ie dysuria, fowl oder to the urine and a fowl odor oin the breath....but there may be no symptons intitially except polyuria (excessive urination) or dysuria,(straining to urinate)....if in doubt in any way shape or form get a urinalysis done quick like...

I joined this board 2 weeks ago after my "sun" was diagnosed with FLUTD. I brought him to the vet very sure he was constipated. Thank goodness my vet immediately knew better. It was a very traumatic weekend for me, but right now he is back to normal and sound asleep on my foot.
What I saw: He went to the litterbox a couple of times, and came out walking VERY slowly, almost bow-legged, and doing a strange meow (looking as if he was in pain). He was also licking what I THOUGHT was his butt.
If you see ANY stange litterbox actions, go to your vet ASAP. This is something that can't wait a day or two to see if it goes away. Good luck!

In addition to the other replies: straining in the litterbox, squatting in unusual places, crying out, producing only drops or no urine at all, blood in urine, painful abdomen, lethargy, weakness and withdrawal.

Any one of these signs can signal an obstruction, not to be confused with an infection. A urinary tract obstruction is a veterinary emergency, there is NO time to waste, if you see your kitty presenting any of these signs, don't wait another minute, get him to your nearest emergency vet IMMEDIATELY.
