Nursing Kittens Too Long
Nursing Kittens Too Long
Hi. New here and also pretty new cat owner. To make this as brief as I can . . . son found young stray. Took her in. Discovered a few weeks later she was VERY pregnant. Had seven kittens! Vet said had to have been first heat. She is not a big cat still. Kittens all lived and mom did a great job with them. We kept two of them. They were born July 27. Mommy cat quit nursing the two remaining ones and they were weaned and eating regular food and all was ok. Then got all three of them spayed on the same day. Mommy cat started nursing them again! Oh, to let you know, kittens were born July 27. Had them spayed about two weeks before Christmas. They had been weaned awhile. They are as big as she is now in length but not weight. Of course, that's because she has milk again. Anyone had this happen? I am worried about my mommy cat. The vet said it's not good for her but won't really hurt her and to try to keep them seperated. Yeah right. We work and we sleep. My mommy cat is not fat but this just seems ridiculous. Will she eventually stop? Thanks for any suggestions. You can email me if you would like. Thanks!!!! To let you know in case you're wondering the mommy cat's name is Zelda. Her babies that we kept are named Minnie and Cleo.
Re: Nursing Kittens Too Long
since your vet recommended keeping them seperated....why not isolate one group into the largest bedroom with their own litter/water/food for the day?
curious (since i dont know), why is it not good for the mother to continue nursing? (diet issues maybe?)

Re: Nursing Kittens Too Long
I have a mommy and baby - Miss Kitty and her Poopie. Poopie nursed until she was TWO YEARS OLD!!! Of course there was no milk because Miss Kitty was spayed, but Poopie just loved to nurse. We thought it was pretty funny actually. My vet said it was just habit. The funny thing was that exactly on the day of Poopie's birthday (June 2nd) Miss Kitty decided that was it, and she pushed her off and never let her do it again!!!!! I don't think it's cause for concern unless mommy's nipple is irritated or something. I'm sure if mom didn't want kitty to nurse, she'd let her know.
Anyway, I enjoyed reading your message -- such a happy story!

Re: Nursing Kittens Too Long
I would keep them separated as well. For as long as they continue to stimulate her, she will continue to give milk, and that isn't really that great for her- healthwise, it is stressful. She has done her job and raised them, she has earned a rest.
