Doggie Drool!

Post by sp »

Hey there and happy new year.

My mom's German Shepard has been drooling profusely in her sleep for the past week. She is not acting sick - she's very playful and her usual self but my mom has been noticing the blanket that her dog sleeps on at night has been very very wet in the morning. She does not see any excessive drooling during the day. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? Thanks!

Is it really drool on the blanket or could she be leaking urine in her sleep?

The first thing that comes to mind is dental problems. It might be a good idea to have her vet check the health of her dog's teeth and gums as well as anything else which may be the cause.

My male GSD began doing this at about 3 years of age after returning from being boarded for 4 days. It turned out to be a damaged trachea. The sad/devastating/sickening inside story on this was that kennel help had decided to "teach him a lesson" and had yanked him around with a slip/choke collar. The damage is permanent and he has drooled profusely ever since in his sleep.
