Why is my male cat still spraying after he was neutered?
Why is my male cat still spraying after he was neutered?
I found and adopted a lovely strawberry blond long-legged male tabby. I finally saved up enough money and had him fixed. He recovered wonderfully from his surgery, but he is now going back to spraying. How gross! I have two other male cats who after they were fixed no longer sprayed. Why does Sunny Gem still do this and what can I do to stop this smelly habit?

I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy -- i'm new to this forum and was wondering what you've learned about this since i can't find the reply's to your question - were there any useful tips?
I've considered feliway pheremones that you can get to calm the cats since i think our problem started while away for a weekend - any thoughts?

Was he spraying before?? If so it might take him a bit to lose the habit...and some neutered males will spray. But first I'd have him checked for a urinary tract infection, often this is the cause of inapproriate urination....and with males you don't want to let it linger...call your vet and take him in. If he does have an infection treatment will generally take care of the spraying. Good luck!

Good Mews for Sunny Gem...and especially me!
I called Sunny's Vet and told her of my dismay that after his surgery (expensive surgery) that Sunny felt the need to spread his "joy juice" all over my apartment. Now, I love Sunny Gem, he was a homeless cat at my complex and I couldn't turn him away...so...you know where I am going with this...
Anyway, the good mews is that Sunny's Vet said he was in fine health a few weeks ago when she operated on him....running all the tests before hand to make sure he was alright. She said it is not unheard of for a young male like Sunny (she said he was no more than a year or two) to still spray for awhile even after his surgery. She said to give him a few more weeks to get board with his old way of life. I told the doctor the boooger even sprayed me and asked if that meant we are engaged? Of course, she replied I need to get out more! Oh well.

I don't know if you've already tried this, but make sure to clean all the areas that he normally sprays really well, with an enzymatic cleaner to get rid of the smell completely. Then he won't be reminded of peeing every time he walks by his favorite wall/couch/person....
