dieing?
dieing?
I adopted 5yr old cat from humane society 5 days ago. Had cold & not eating very much. Vet treated cold & hydrated & vitamin B. Two days later back at vet. cold better but not eating or drinking. Tests run. all clear except white cells 31,000. Hydarated again & vitamin B. Vet said got to get cat to eat. I have tried Science Diet prescription a/d, high caloric supplement, cat food from humane society, chicken, tuna, egg, cheese, special cat milk, cream, milk, my other cat's food. I've tried serving it in cat dishes, plates, my finger, rubbing it on him, the floor & he won't eat or drink. He just turns his head away. Is there any hope?
Re: dieing?
Did your vet prescribe antibiotics? If not, you need to get your kitty to a NEW vet IMMEDIATELY. Cats who don't eat/drink for more than 2-3 days can fast suffer dehydration and vital organ failure, don't take that chance. Your vet should have explored further diagnostics, since it's been 5 days now and kitty is not not eating/drinking, you can't afford to waste any more time. Please get your kitty to a new vet or preferrably an emergency vet right away. Kitty could probably benefit from fluids, antibiotics and possibly entereal nutrition.
Ask the new vet to give kitty a comprehensive oral exam in case there is an oral health issue like loose or diseased teeth, ulcers, etc. that could be preventing him from eating. Also ask him to rule out various virals/bacterials like calicivirus, chlamydia, rhinotracheitis, etc. If he is congested, he can't smell his food, which can cause severe anorexia (you can try warming up the food), and antibiotics are necessary to combat secondary infections.
Please don't wait on this, get your kitty to a new vet/emergency vet TODAY.

Re: dieing?
Thanks for your help. I got Riley to a vet today. He's staying over night. The vet will be hydrating him, xraying him & doing a UA. The vet thinks it might be hyperthyroidism or tumor or urinary infection. There's definitely some kind of infection because of his white cell count. His kidneys & liver look OK.
Re: dieing?
I hope all goes well with your kitty. Thanks for taking Riley in for further help immediately.
I'll keep Riley in my thoughts and prayers. When you get a chance, please let us know how he is doing.
