Young cat w/ litter issues, acting strange

Post by Carrie »

I recently adopted a young cat (less than a year old) and he seemed to adjust very well. He had the sneezes and some ear mites, so we went to the vet, and he was on antibiotics for a short time. After a month or so, I noticed that he was not always going to the litter box. Sometimes he would, sometimes he would pee and even poo on the carpet in one room. I also have noticed some other strange behaviors. One, he has started licking the floor and carpet around the entrance to where the litter box is, basically licking up the clumping cat litter bits from the floor (and i've even seen him do this in the box itself). Two, sometimes he walks very wierd, like he has no control over his rear and hind legs. He especially does this on his way to the litter box, and afterwords. Sometimes he will be half in the litter box sniffing and licking, and go poo on the outside without even getting into position to go to the bathroom. He just sorta does it while walking. Coincidentilly, he never really got rid of his sneezes and still seems to have a slight cold.
He doesn't seem to strain when urinating, and I've cleaned up many pee messes and they don't seem to indicate a urinary tract infection (they don't smell bad and aren't cloudy). His poos look regular too. He hasn't stopped eating or going to the bathroom. And besides his walk, he doesn't seem to strain while going. I've replaced part of his litter with the regular stuff in case it was the litter he didn't like, but that doesn't seem to help.
Has anyone heard of this type of behavior before, and are they related to each other? My vet is kinda old, and I'm not sure my cat will get diagnosed properly unless I really point him in the right direction. My fear here is that my cat has some sort of serious problem.

The appropriate thing to do is see a new vet and get a new comprehensive exam for your kitty. Gait problems, such as you noted, should not go unexamined, it could be anything from a previous injury to a neurological/neuromuscular problem.

Also wanted to mention that the clumping clay cat litter is not good for your cat's stomach; especially for kittens, or if he's eating a lot of it. It could clump up in his stomach and form a hard ball of clay... I'd switch to a non-clumping clay litter or a clumping litter not made of clay.

And by all means see a new vet, especially if you don't think that your current vet will give you a good diagnosis; there's no need for loyalty here!
