Food question
Food question
If I make coconut, lemon or vanilla instant pudding and chicken noodle soup, Dolly will stand on her hind legs begging for some (she always does this when I feed her, just a thank you I guess ) and I have been giving her alittle, maybe a tablespoon total licking off my finger. Of course not eating it every day but sometimes maybe twice a week. I just got to thinking though that this is so cute and precious to me but may not be good for her. She loves her food and eats well, and doesn't act like she wants any other "human" food except maybe tuna So what's the word, do I need to stop Wanda
Re: Food question
Since all are sources of high fat, I would nix letting her have any. I'm surprised she would like the lemon, most cats hate citrus of any kind.
Since she is begging for treats, consider any one of the high-quality treats you can get in your local store in the cat food aisle (i.e., pounce or whisker's).....you can even choose 'oral care' treats that are both somewhat healthy and helpful in keeping tarter at bay. I would only give them minimally though, because the more treats you feed, the more a food aversion may develop at some point in time. Giving treats a few times a week is acceptable, but please, no table scraps, etc, these are usually very high in fats.

Re: Food question
ok consider them nixed , my enjoyment is not worth her health, we will just play more instead. I have tried the treats at the store but so far have not found any she likes, but I will keep trying. Funny about the citris I didn't know that and it is her favorite, she can smell it better I think cause she starts her begging while I'm making it. I don't think she knows she is a cat, I fed her from a dropper when she was 3 or 4 weeks old, she looks part siamese (creamy beige with the black around her nose, ears feet and tail, she is beautiful) but her mom would not have anything to do with her so when mom moved her bed and left her alone, we brought her in. Her mom is an outside cat. The other kittens were black like mom and Dolly was an outsider I guess. Anyway what Dolly wants she usually gets, but she seems to crave chocolate and I know thats a big no no, but I have to keep it in cabinet if I have any, cause if left on end table or something she will swipe it. After Easter my grandson had left his basket on his top bunk, and the next day or so I went to get vaccuum and she had hid a pile of chocolate eggs there and ate some, but thank goodness I found them before she ate much. I don't have it here much though cause I'm allergic. Thanks again, I will find her a healthy treat, probably be a good for me too , Wanda
Re: Food question
I've had good luck with pounce and whisker lickin's, but I don't give them too frequently. Just a couple options if you want to consider treats: If she normally eats dry food, consider giving her the same brand/variety in a canned form. Many owners give both dry and canned food, with the latter usually used as a treat when they are already on a dry food.
Another option is maybe considering vegetables as a healthy treat. (i.e., green beans, corn, cauliflower). Given in small amounts (not all the time), will not be harmful. For a hazards list, however, you can check here....scroll to At a Glance-Toxic Foods.

Re: Food question
Wow Traci, everyone that hasn't should check out that page, some I knew of course but several I didn't. I bookmarked it for future use. Will try the treats you suggested, she eats both dry and canned food now. While she was expecting she got real finicky and wouldn't eat her canned food so I tried some dry, so now I try to alternate. The veggies sound like a good idea for both of us, I believe if I'm eating them she will. I don't think she is really hungry, cause she sure lets me know when she is, I think its just like you said a treat and extra attention from me. Thanks once again, Wanda
Re: Food question
Heh, this thread is making my hungry...I'll trade you some cauliflower for coconut pudding
Just a precaution, if she hasn't had veggies before, just give her tiny amounts, like a bite only...some vegetables can cause gastric upset or diarrhea if kitty has never been exposed to them in her diet before. Again, you only want to give as treats, nothing more.
I assume her diet consists of mostly dry food (at her preference), so maybe just giving her a couple teaspoons of canned twice a day would serve as a treat for her. You are probably right, she is demanding your attention moreso than a treat.

Re: Food question
We have similar problems with our kitty. ANYTIME we're eating, doesn't matter what it is, she climbs all over us, trying to get to the food, crying and meowing, working her little nose. She'll do it whether she's hungry or not. I thought this was wierd, she's so young. Maybe she just wants attention, but she really acts like she wants the food!
Re: Food question
Hey Christa,
I'm sure she would like to have the food as well as the attention, but I taught Dolly right away no jumping in my lap while I'm eating. I was afraid eating table scrapes would make her get on table or counter and that is a big no-no around here. She isn't perfect ocasionally with the pudding she will jump but I say no and she gets down. I never feed her when I'm eating always before or after hoping she would learn and she has. They are alot like kids, they will try to get away with things if you let them. When she behaves well I make she I pet her, rub under chin is her favorite, seems like she is happy if she makes me happy, and she makes me very happy Wanda
