Mabel girl dog and her seizures.... davet..

Post by Kevin »

Ok so in the last 3 weeks ot so, Mabel has had two seizures that I know of. understand that i'm not here during the day and a lot of evenings. .. but of course, I always make sure that these dogs are cared for and they get a lot of dog love. Anyway, she just had 2 in a row. Not grand mall mind you.. but they seem to be getting worse. Its been a long time since I saw 2 like this. I think that a lot of this is due to her enviroment.. but she has a stable life now... in fact the dogs have started playing again in just the last 2 weeks. They didnt play for the last few months... to much stress here in that time.
i have called my vet and asked for pheno.. as much as i hate to do that.. I've put it off for the last 4 years cause she was not that bad and they were few and far between. But with these coming on as often as I'm seeing them.. and I don't know what she goes thru when I'm not here... this is what I'm thinking. The vet is supposed to call me back in a few hours and tell me if she needs to go in for an exam. She just had one on the 7th of last month. Please tell me.. am I doing right here with her in your eyes? I just want my dog to be ok... thanks.

i would get her in so the vet can look at the background of her eyes to see if there are sanyu significant features there, which i doubt that there will be but if there is a bulging of the optic disc then different medications should be used...I hear a lot of people being advers to the use of phenobarb..whe you get the dose titrated ot set for her weight and size then you have no side effects esxcept the lessening or maybe complete controll tof the seizures....even any side effects are nothing compared to the nerve damage that is done every time they have a seizure...i think i would get her in yesterday to start medication...your vet may not want to use pheno cause there are a lot more scientific things then pheno but none, IMHO, are any better and are far more costly...once she gets the proper dose you will possibly see a seizure free dog with no lethargay or slowing down.....yeszterday (hey i like that word yeszterday)

Don't forget to monitor those liver values with the phenobarb.

I have a time slot on Monday at 6:00pm to bring her in for the check up and blood work. Of course I'm going to be asking many questions.... I need this dog to be stable of course. She sees me through a lot. Shes a good dog....
In the next few months, I will be selling this house and moving on. I'm sure that it will be stressful for her.. I'll keep a very close eye on her and Wilbur... he's a very stable dog while Mabel tends to be not so much...
But at any rate... I need to make sure she is ok in all ways... I scratch her back... she scratchs at the door. lol!

Unstable Mabel becoming stable - that's quite a wish isn't it?

Sorry to hear Mable is having more problems. I hope you are able to get the seizures under control soon. jdf had Roxy on an herb to help protect the liver while she was on pheno, (was it milk thistle?) - For the life of me, I can't remember it right now (and I should know it - that bugs me - this getting older crud isn't any fun!)

Kevin, Mabel has my best thoughts! I sure hope she's OK, and that medicine will help her. She's an adorable dog, and you're a good dog person that I know will do the best possible for her. Sorry I have no good wise words, like the "Annointed Dress-Wearing One" (sorry Davet, I couldn't help myself) :D
