How did they test for UTI?

Post by kimkats000 »

I will be taking one of my cats to the vet tomorrow as he might have a UTI. He has been seen in the litterbox many times tonight. I would like to know what the vet will do to test for UTI? Do I need to have the cat fast? I think I will take the food up just in case as it is late. BUT I can/will feed him in the morning if fasting was not needed. Thank you for any answers. Kim

Hi,

I hope all goes well withyour kitty at the vet tomorrow. Thank you for taking great care of your kitty as soon as you see a problem.

If you can get a urine specimen from your kitty, that would be great. Otherwise, the vet may want to get one tomorrow. Giving the vet a good history of what you have seen, such as if your kitty goes to the litter box and not much urine is coming out, if he/she is straining, if there are any changes in drinking or eating will be helpful in making the diagnosis. I'm not sure of the age of your kitty, but bloodwork may be done or if there are reasons to suspect something else is going on..

There is no need to have your kitty fast.

If you kitty is diagnosed with a UTI, antibiotics and a special prescription diet are usually prescribed.

Please let us know how everything goes tomorrow with your furboy.

nothing special should be done for the uti test, if you leave your cat there the vet will probably try to allow him to urinate on his own, otherwise they will extract it by inserting a "tube"....dont worry, its ok...ive had this done to one of my cats a few times.

best time to take cat in would be a little while after he drinks alot and obviously before he uses the litterbox, however i doubt you will be so lucky.

keep us updated on your cat (and let us know his name too).

very easy to get a sample from a cat via cystocentesis, ie poking a hypo needle into the full or nearly full bladder...cats are good patients as long as they are good cats...a good scratching behing the ear or under the chin and a quick pop and a great sterile sample is obrtained..i say this is easy but not all the time, have had to pick one or two cats off the surgical lamp when trying this procedure...but most are coopeartive....
