Traci....I have a question about kittens...msg....

Post by Eileen F. »

Hi Traci. I haven't visited your board for awhile. How are you?

Guess what? We have a new addition!! Yup, two weeks ago we adopted a 9 week old Maine Coon/Turkish Angora mix. We named him Max. We love him, he's a great little guy, very very friendly. He loves Reggie and Nike. They are getting along fairly well athough Nike seems to be mad at me and tony!! LOL. By the way, Nike has had no seizures since she has been on phenobarb and her last blood tests were GREAT.

Anyway, Max is healthy!! But my sister (who lost her beloved 15 year old Siamese China a few weeks ago) adopted two of Max's brothers....they are Fergus and Caeser. Well, these kittens have both developed colds and eye infection. First Caeser got sick with sneezing and one eye infected. He was put on oral antibiotics and eye ointment. Fergus only had a slight infection in one eye and no sneezing so only eye ointment for him. Then Caeser was allergic to the ointment so he was switched to artificial tears. Then Fergus started sneezing so he is on antibioitics and now his OTHER eye is bothering him. LOL.

The kittens have been to the vet twice. They are in a room with a humidifer. They are eating well and VERY playful. But how long do you think the cold will last? Will they keep infecting each other? Caeser's eye is all cleared up, his little nose was sore but that looks fine now but he is STILL sneezing. He's been on antibiotics since 11/5, Fergus since 11/10.
My sister is out of town for the weekend so I am checking in on the boyz three times per day.

Will they need to visit the vet Monday? More antibiotics you think or just more time? Our vet did not seem very concerned and they are most definitely getting better and act very playful but I have no idea how long a kitties cold can last!!!

Thanks for all your help in advance. The boyz are due for their next set of shots on 11/15. Max should go but should the boyz wait until they are over their cold? I feel bad that my sister's kittens got sick after what she went through with China but again, thank god they seem fine. They are sooooooooooooooooooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eileen, I would give this another 7 days to hope for improvement...if none seen within 7 days, opt for another course of antibiotics, preferrably clavamox. It wouldn't be uncommon for a URI to take as long as 4 weeks to heal.

No, they can't keep passing the viral to each other, but they can infect other cats. While you're caring for them, be sure to disinfect your hands before leaving, and preferrably changing your clothes before handling your own kitties.

Yes, wait on vaccinations, you never want to vaccinate an unhealthy, stressed or compromised kitten or adult cat. I would wait until both kittens' symptoms have completely cleared, including nasal or eye discharge and/or sneezing.

I don't think they need to be seen on Monday....unless of course symptoms worsen, appetites decrease, fever is present or discharge and sneezing worsens. Don't know how much antibiotics the vet prescribed, but you may need to get a refill. Since the first course was started for Ceasar on the 5th, I'd assume the vet wanted both kittens on antibiotics for at least 14 days, and if needed, he can extend that for another 7 days for both kittens.

It's good to hear they are playful and have healthy appetites, continue to watch them closely for any of the above mentioned signs.

Congrats on your new addition!

Thank you Traci for your very informative reply, as always. I just called up my sister and read your reply and she feels much better now!! They are on Clamvox (sp?) by the way and I do know this is a good antibiotic. She will call the vet on Wednesday and ask if they should get more. Caeser is most definitely feeling better......I've never seen such a frisky little kitten.......he's pretty funny to watch.

Again, thank you so much. You're the best!!!

Hello there stranger! Remember me? I hope you come back here to view your post again. I have been wondering about you. I'm glad to hear that you have a new addition to your home, and that it is going well. I know it also is a great help to your sister to have you nearby to help her out (and vice versa). We were just over your way on Saturday, but just for a few hours. I hope the kittens continue to get better, and quickly! What a bunch of furry fun kitties are. ((hugs)), kk
