bloody stool and colitis

Miow - I just wanted to tell all of you that I just turned 7 months old, and what do I get???? I'll tell you. NO presents. Instead, my mommy tricked me into getting into the carrier and then she dragged me off to the vet today. I told her I was feeling fine, but she wouldn't listen, can you believe it!? She said there was some bloody mucous on the litterbox, and then she checked my poop and there was blood in there too, so she said we had to go to the vet.

The vets and the technicians there are pretty nice and I don't mind if they hold me, but the whole experience was scary so I kept trying to climb onto my mommy's shoulders. Then there was a gigantic white bird in a cage, and that was scary too, but mom thought I wanted to watch it. No way, Jose! Then I got poked and prodded and checked, and they shoved a pill down my throat, and then finally we got to go home. I was pretty mad at my mommy for a while but now I'm going to go back to sleeping in her lap so she can tell you the rest of the story.

Thank you Pele.... yep, the vet diagnosed her with colitis and he Rx'd some powdered Panacur and a bunch of tablets of Metronidazole. They're going to run a fecal on both hers and my other cat's stool, so hopefully we'll find out what's causing it. I've been doing some research on colitis since we got home from the vets, and read that a blood count, chemistry profile and urinalysis are all recommended also, but I didn't think to ask the vet about that.

It's awful when our babies are sick... I'm hoping this isn't too serious and the drugs clear it up. Please keep her in your thoughts!

Thanks guys ... I'm just hoping that the drugs clear it up. We're going to have fun learning to pill her (she wants you to know that the vet is much better at pilling cats than her meowmie is). I feel just terrible about it -- she's had diarrhea on and off for a while, and so it's possible that this is chronic colitis - so I probably should have taken her to the vet a while ago. But the bloody mucous finally tipped me off to something worse being wrong. It's funny how interested in poop we get when we have 'kids', isn't it? I guess I'll be checking poop daily for the next couple of weeks.

Those things happen...if only our furbabies can talk...I do hope the medicine helps.

Best of luck to you with the pilling, it will get easier. I just went through this with Smokey and he's doing alot better now....Lots of praise, kisses and special cuddling has helped, but it took awhile.

I am constantly on litterbox patrol...I do chuckle sometimes about it.

She's refusing to eat her canned food laced with dewormer tonight, although she ate it just fine last night. Guess we'll try with tuna next...
