Off antibiotic too soon?

Post by Cleo »

My 3 year old Keeks went in for a dental cleaning last Monday and ended up having 6 of her back teeth pulled due to infection. Her foul breath and other mouth problems were coming from stomatitis, although she tested negative for everything. The smell is gone and she's doing well now.

She was put on 1ML of Antirobe twice a day for 10 days. By Friday of last week, the 4th day on it, she had diarrhea and wasn't eating much. The vet decided she had enough in her after 4 days and said to discontinue it. If she was still sick by today to bring her in.

She appears fine; is eating, playing and sleeping normal. I don't want to stress her out by bringing her in if I don't have to. Last week was a battle. I asked the vet if she should be on something else, he didn't think so. Would the 4 days have been enough?

Thanks!

Some cats are sensitive to antirobe so ceasing the med was probably the right thing to do. If she has any reoccuring problems, ask your vet about using clavamox instead.

I would recommend talking to him about using oral chlorhexidine solution or gel as a topical therapy, used daily or on a regular schedule can help curb bacterial infections and can help control peridontal lesions.

Watch her appetite from here on, watch for any signs of pain or lethargy (indicating bacterial infection), and don't hesitate to contact your vet for further instruction.

Thanks Traci. I actually have an oral hygiene gel for dogs and cats that contains chlorhexidine gluconate. I was using that prior to all of this but will mention what you said to the vet and continue with this.
