Need to know dosage

Post by Nancy (Spuddie' s Mum) »

I have two 13 year old cats and one took sick last week with vomiting and a fever, the runs. I took him to the vet and they felt he had a bacterial infection and prescribed Amoxicillin and Metaclopromide. It has worked great and he seems fine now. The problem is that his sister has started to throw up and I'm sure it's the same thing, the symptoms are identical. Last week I spend almost $400. at the vet, I am so out of money it's not funny and I had to even post date a cheque for them for hubby's next pay. I'm not very happy. So I called them and they said I should bring her in because they don't want to prescribe without seeing the patient. I told them I can't bring her in, first I don't have a vehicle, and second, I am flat broke. So they said they would call me back and let me know if they would give me the Amoxicillin without seeing her. If they won't then I have to get some to treat her or all three cats will be sick in no time and the one who has just finished his treatment will have to start all over again. (sigh). So, what I plan to do is order the Liquid Amoxicillin from 1800PetMeds, but I need to know what the dosage would be for an 18 pound cat. If anyone can help me out I would truly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Can you order antibiotics without a prescription. I have not seen a site where you could even the Heartguard. A followup visit should not cost as much just to check kitty and prescribe antibiotics though.

good luck.

just a quick followup after more coffee...as a rule of thumb, its best to not follow dosages not prescribed by a vet who has actually seen your pet.

i understand you were not seeing your vet for financial reasons, but one could make a non-financially costly mistake by making assumptions with a prescription drug and/or self-medicating without a proper diagnosis.

Thought I'd give you an update. As it turned out we didn't need the antibiotics after all. The vet said to give her some of the Metaclopormide and that the antibiotics for my other cat had been because they thought he possibley had a tooth infection. Which was news to me because the vet we saw (not my own) never even mentioned that. ( I really hate it when my vet is away). So, now they are all fine and no one is puking anymore (thank God). I was starting to really feel the pinch but I think things are fine now, but appreciate your advice. :)
