Boarding the cat

Post by JessK »

I've had my kitty four months and haven't had to leave him anywhere yet but now need to quickly find a place to board him for three days while we have new windows installed (and it would also be helpful to have a place in mind for future travel etc.

Are there reputable organizations that can make local referrals? Any suggestion of how to find a good place quick? I was going to board him at the vet but they don't have any space available when I need it...

Any suggestions most appreciated!

Jess,

Did you happen to ask the vet for a referral?

how bout a neighbor??? and cats can be left at home for allmost two weeks...they have done this with video and find the cats just cuddle up to a couch or a space of their choosing, eat and drink when they feel the need...cats, regardless of how spoiled they are can survie alone for long periods as long as they have food and water and liter amd m,aybe a radio to keep them occupied...oh yeah, they also need a looking out window which they will not have when boarded...

But, Davet, she's having her windows replaced. Kitty would escape!!

Duh. Just read yours again, Davet. You meant for future trips the kitty could be left alone. Honestly, sometimes, I feel like digging a big hole and hiding in it.

Well. about 5 months ago we had all new windows put in(12), and at the time Honeybun (5 yrs old) was in the house. We just moved her to the bathroom and when they finished another room (computer room) she went in there and that way we just shut the door.

I know kittens are different (escape artists), so how about a large crate made for animals. Pet Smart has them and they can hold food and water etc.

I don't recommend boarding unless absolutely necessary. Boarding can be extremely stressful on cats, and you can never assume or predict who will be taking care of them, if quality time and attention will be paid to them, etc. Plus, if kitty is not up-to-date on vaccinations, there is a risk factor of trasmitted viruses from other cats.

As for getting your windows done, I agree with Mona, simply keep your kitty in another room closed off so he cannot escape or be injured.

As for the future, it is really best to have someone you know and trust come into your home to care for kitty. I recommend at least once or twice a day check-ins, to feed/water, play with kitty, etc. Cats fair better in their own home environment when their owners are gone. There's a post in Debbie's Cloud about tips on petsitters and what you would expect from the person taking care of your kitty when you're gone.

Thanks for the suggestions. Traci, I will go to Debbie's Cloud and read the suggestions for sitters. The thing I worry about with sitters is that he'll be too lonely. He's six months old and seems to strongly prefer having his humans around. He's never spent a night alone yet. How old will he need to be to be mature enough for me not to worry about that?

For the window installation, I got a referral from the vet, but they only provided one, and it was not at all convenient location-wise. Also I didn't like the idea of him being in a little cage (jail) all day. So we opted with having him stay at a friend's house. It isn't ideal because they care for lots of strays and I'm worried about germs and fleas, but he has had his vaccinations. I hope to do it only for a day, then lock him in a finished room at home for the next day(s).

Thanks again!

So, this is a bit off topic, but do you mean that i don't have to feel bad when i leave the house for more than four hours? I feel terrible whenever i've been out all day... Do you think three cats will be okay by themselves for a couple of days if we have someone staying over? They'll be alone all day though... :(
