Ants and food!

Post by Mona »

Well I found little ants going towards Chloe's food. Thank goodness the bowels are raised off the ground.

I am asking if anyone knows of a product to spray that is not harmful to kitties.

I live in Florida so bugs are well always around. I have it sprayed professional but hesitate to do so unless I know what the product it.

Would appreciate any advice or products that are completely safe for animals.

Mona...we have a huge problem with ants too...the one thing that we found that worked was a product called Timbor. It's basically boric acid...and we recently ran out so I am trying one of the brands from Home Depot...Timbor is a professional strength borate powder. It was recommended to me by a entymologist for the tiny grease eating ants we have. I'll let you know if the stuff from Home Depot works as well...we had to buy the Timbor at a pesticide place.

Boric acid is not safe to apply where pets can get to it so we had to come up with a solution to apply, keep our pets safe and eliminate the ants. So we took all the switchplate and outlet plate covers off, used a little bellows like container, and administered the powder into the walls. We also removed the baseboards and administered it behind the baseboards, then replaced them (well, we were putting down tile at the time so the baseboards were removed for that purpose). Thirdly we applied a line of powder right up against our house outside, around the entire perimeter. I know this is risky if there are outside animals, but I think it's safer than most pesticides. That seemed to get rid of the ants. We are battling with them again though...so it's time to reapply. I'll let you know if the cheaper boric acid works as well as the Timbor. So far I've only gotten to applying it in the bathrooms, but the kitchen is the worse place with infestation. I hope to get to that today if I have time.

HTH :)

You can also sprinkle red pepper around the edges of doorway frames, and along baseboards if they are not too close to the cats' dishes. I don't think the cats would show interest in getting near red pepper....

I've only had to do that once, and it actually worked. For added measure, I also put double-sided tape along the edges so that the ants couldn't actually "cross" the red pepper line, and it kept the pepper from getting messy on the floors.

That is a good idea with the red pepper. I will get some. As for the boric acid powder , my husband used to put that in the wall outlets and I will have him do that again and around the windows, between the screen window.
