Mr. Blue was bitten this morning by another dog! Pic..
Hello everyone,
I'm still shaking from this! I was walking Mr. Blue this morning, and our neighbor's Saint Bernard came bounding out, no leash, and attacked Mr. Blue! He's got a gash on his shoulder right now. I immediately took him to the vet, because I didn't know what to do about a dog bite. They shaved the area, washed it down really well, and gave us some antibiotics for him. the vet said it was almost big enough for a stitch or two, but she preferred to leave it open for better air circulation and healing. I'm supposed to put a warm wet washcloth on it twice a day to keep it clean, soaked in an Epsom salt solution. She also told me to go to the neighbors to make sure their dog is up to date on rabies. Mr. Blue certainly is! I just feel horrible about this; Mr. Blue was just walking on the sidewalk and wasn't anywhere near their yard. We've met this dog before on leash, and they had no problems. This wound looks scary to me, although in this picture it looks worse. The actual cut is only about 3/4 of an inch long. So you can bet Mr. Blue is going to get lots of cuddles and treats today. I'm going to go out now for Epsom salts, and try to calm down some more before I go talk to the neighbors.

Wow! How did you manage to get the Saint off of Mr. Blue? So glad he didn't do more damage, and that you didn't get bit too! Did anyone else see what happened? Those people should pay your vet bills!

Yikes!! Poor guy! Give him snuggles from all of us here. I didn't think St. Bernards were normally aggressive... but you never know what you'll encounter on a walk...

Thanks guys! The woman came running out, and managed to get the other dog off Mr. Blue. She'd left their back gate open, allowing the St. Bernard and another dog to coming running out. The other dog came out first, and her and Mr. Blue were sniffing noses, no problems, when the St Bernard came out. It almost seems like he was protecting the other dog or something. I just came back from talking to the Saint's owner, who wasn't there at the time. He should me his vet receipt from early October, when he got a new rabies vac, so that's good. He also told me he talked to the lady about always keeping the gate closed. I feel better about things now, a little. His wound is still oozing blood a bit. If it looks any worse, or if it doesn't stop bleeding, we'll go straight to the emergency vet for stitches. Hopefully that won't be needed. I just need to stop feeling so guilty about this. I know I couldn't have done anything: it happened so fast, and when they've met before out on walks, they got along fine. It just feels like it's my job to protect my dog, and I didn't do it this time. I'm passing on snuggles from all of you, and will continue to do so tonight The vet said he may get really sore later tonight or tomorrow, that he might have a pulled muscle in his shoulder and just to watch out for that. So the plan is very short walks, avoiding that house, and hopefully no trip to the emergency vet!

Oh, Mary- so sorry for Mr. Blue and YOU! This is my worst fear too- when walking her.. You must be shaken up a lot. You reacted quickly and did the right thing- thank goodness it was during the day, not at night, although you could have gone to emerg. dog clinic. Looks terrible!
Honey and I are sending hugs to you both.

thanks momPaws...hugs are definitely welcome right now! I've calmed down a bit - at least I stopped shaking! The vet told me it was good I brought him in right away, so they could start him on antibiotics. I noticed, on my receipt print-out, that she was very specific about how big his wound is (1.5 centimeters), and what was recommended. I figure they must deal with dog bite situations a lot, certainly more than I ever have! It worries me a bit because it is still bleeding, not real heavy but enough to be noticeable. My hubby's thought is to let him rest and sleep a lot tonight, and maybe it will start to scab over overnight. If not, off to the emergency vets for us. Of course, he's not helping things any; he just chased an evil squirrel out of the yard. He's not letting a wound slow him down any! I've listened to the song I always associate with Mr. Blue emergencies. It was playing the first time I had to take him in with a serious problem. It's called "No Alibis" by Eric Clapton, and there's a line in there that just seemed to fit too well - "No one's ever gonna love you, the way that I love you, I never wanna see you doin' without."

Oh, Mary..what a day for you and Mr. Blue... How frigthening but the bite doesn't seem to have stopped him from having some fun..which is a good thing.
I'll say a pray tonight for Mr. Blue for a speedy and uneventful recovery...and of course for one for you, too..
Take care

Thanks LisaLisa! I took him for a short walk tonight, and we stopped by our friends' house, just 1/2 block away. I thought it would be good to show him how fun walks still are, and I think it worked! They loved on him, and gave him TWO dog treats! They didn't bring out their dog; we all thought it would be best to wait until his wound heals up a bit. It's looking better already; it's not oozing fresh blood anymore. He's been getting tons of cuddles, so I think he'll be OK!

Thanks oconnorjoy! I am fairly convinced that good thoughts and prayers for him are helping, because his wound is looking much better right now. I put an epsom salt compress on it a little while ago, and it looks likes it's stopped oozing blood so much. I've taken him upstairs and gotten him comfortable on our bed, and I hope he sleeps really well and that this helps heal things up a bit. If it's still looking so much better tomorrow, I'll take another pic of it to show everyone.
