How can I curb my cats appetite?
How can I curb my cats appetite?
I have an old farm cat that i rescued who had always been outside before we took him in. He was free to hunt on the farm and now only has the catfood we buy for his diet. After I took him to the vet and got him dewormed (tapeworms) his appetite is HUGE. A friend said that you should feed about a cup a day so I tried splitting up two feedings so it might feel like more for him. He cries so loud and rubs all over my ankles to the point where i cant walk without gettin tripped whenever his bowl is empty. Ive tried all sorts of distractions. Anyone have advice? please?
Re: How can I curb my cats appetite?
You describe kitty as "an old farm cat".....so how old is he?
You said you got him a vet check, but, was any blood profiling done? You must know that in older kitties, especially in any kitty older than 7 years of age, a full blood profile should be done to rule out common diseases associated with age. Just to mention a few: Diabetes, Hyperthyroidism, Kidney disease, Liver disease, Heart disease, IBD. Any one of these diseases could be associated with increase and/or decrease in appetite, weight loss, etc.
Your kitty could have an underlying health condition that would not have been detected by simple exam alone. Please get your kitty back to your vet and opt for full blood profiling that includes a urinalysis and thyroid function testing.

Traci tyvm for the advice but I DID have all the screenings and disease tests done when I took him into the vet and thank god hes healthy and clean other than the worms he had. As far as his age I guess it to be over five at least but he was abandoned on this farm so I cant know his true age. My vet said that it was normal for him to have an INCREASED appetite after gettin him dewormed and to simply cut back on his meals. I dont want him to be obeese and unhealthy so I guess my question is only HOW do i continue the cut back and not go insane with his begging.
Re: How can I curb my cats appetite?
First, I don't know where your vet is getting the idea that after deworming, the appetite should increase. That is simply not true.
Can you tell me WHAT tests were done (CBC and chem profile)? Was a thyroid panel and urinalysis included? Was a fecal exam done?
What is the food you are feeding him? If it is by chance, a generic or store-brand type, this could be part of the problem (not fortified properly with appropriate ingredients or nutrients)
