That would depend on the nature of the problem. If the actual tooth were decayed or necessitated extraction, nothing a laser can do about that. Usually, the only thing a laser is used for in dental prophy is in cases such as severe inflammation or gingivitis-related conditions, whereby the laser can remove diseased tissue (can also be used for bone disease, but may be an extensive, involved procedure). Other oral applications are generally ulcers, tumors, etc.

If used for diseased tissue only, the benefits of laser surgery are reduced post-op swelling, reduced bleeding, less pain/quicker recovery and can sterilize bacteria as it is being applied to tissue.

If your kitty has an oral health problem, discuss it thoroughly with your vet so you understand the cause and option to treat. If your vet said extraction was necessary, he probably has good reason to suggest it. If you proceed with a dental of any sort, do opt for a pre-surg screen and if your kitty is older than 7 or has a primary health condition, also ask about an ECG prior to anesthesia.
