Almost Back to normal

Post by TheSkeptic »

No hint of any aggression today. The only sign of yesterday's brawl, besides the wounds, which are healing with fantastic rapidity, is that Inky is sticking of Cheryl and I like glue.

Today I dropped off Jumbo at a vet in Uptown New Orleans to be Neutered and treated for some Scleraderma. The vet is generously donating the spay and treatment. Wish the vets here is Laplace would take a hint from that.

Here is Jumbo on the way to the vet's this morning.

Image

most of the vet's clientelle are well heeled yuppies, but his clinic is in a rather seedy part of town. Naturally I could not park next to the clinic and the spot I found was near some tough looking characters. When I stepped out of the Jeep they started toward me, but abruptly changed direction when Jumbo got out the Jeep.

From the vet's I went to Algers and picked up this load of food donated by the LASPCA. Most of it iw Old Roy, but hey what do you expect for free? The people it is intended for were quite happy to recieve it.

I left the Shelter at 2:00 to go pick up Jumbo. Here is a picture from the Interstate 5 miles from the shelter. Note the time and how quickly the scenery is not going by. Yep halted by an accident on the elevated expressway with no way to turn around and go another route.

I was plagued with bad traffic the whole drive in. The 45 minute drive turned out to be over 2 hours long! A beautiful day, no bad weather, road conditions excellent and accidents everywhere! (I was almost rear ended at least 5 times. (Stopped no where to go and car sliding on protesting tires toward by rear!) However the heavy traffic did have its advantages. I was able to take some pictures during stops of some of the beautiful old homes that have been restored in the past 20 years. Admittedly not the best examples of the architecture, tehy do tend to illusstrate the most of the range of styles. They go from neo-classical to severely functional to whimsical to wierd. Enjoy. BTW I get to make the trip tomorrow as they decided to keep Jumbo overnight.

Most of the homes here were built in the mid to late nineteenth century. A very few were built in the early twentieth century. (Before 1920) The best way to see them is to make the round trip on the Street cars. Canal Street to Carrolton & Claiborne and back.

Here is a not so good picture of the front of Loyola University. Tulane is right next door, but I was rolling to fast to get a picture of it. It is interesting because they are still using the original buildings built in the 1840's. They had to ship the granite the original buildings are made of from hundreds of miles upriver. The wood inside is good ole Louisiana Oak and Cypress!

Audobon Park is right across the streed from the Universities. The Zoo is about 6 blocks back from St. Charles Ave, the street I am on. The land was originally part of teh Bore Plantation. This plantation was famous for two things,

1: Audobon did many of his paintings there over several summers in New Orleans.

2; It is the site where the technique of making granulated sugar from sugar cane was developed.

This is probably of no interest to anyone here, but it is Mater de la Rosa School. I attended kindergarded there and got in trouble the first time for asking questions I wasn't supposed to ask. (Hey how was i supposed to know I wasn't supposed to ask them if I didn't ask them?)

Finally I arrived home to my loving family and puppers. Who were well behaved tonight.

One last thing. We were told today that grapes are toxic for dogs. I have never heard of this, in fact I know of people who feed frozen grapes to their dogs with no problems. Does anyone have any info on this. Grapes are not listed my toxic plant lists.

Jumbo is doing OK. --- He has some swelling, but that should go down in the next couple of days. He is Heartworm Positive though and they are working on getting that treated. He is back in his kennel and is happy, but would be much happier if someone would adopt him! HINT HINT HINT

Oh, how I loved New Orleans. I visited years ago, but the memory is still fresh in my mind. That cute little trolley in your photo that went past all the old, stately homes..........it was like 10 cents to ride on it.
I still occasionally order the chickory coffee from Cafe Du Monde on Decatur Street, to give as Christmas gifts.
Someday I'll have to get back there. It's calling me.
