Help...Honey has me worried..
Help...Honey has me worried..
sometimes she has been panting while just resting and it is not hot weather here now. She just woke up from a nap and was breathing hard and panting a lot. Vet checked her heart at last check-up, but what are signs of heart trouble in older dog?
Re: Help...Honey has me worried..
this is not really too unusual, why some dogs go it i don't know...next time check her gums, or first check them when she is notmal and the compare when she is panting....you can also check the vessesls in the white of her eyes the same way....but it could just be anxiety..but an EKG would not hurt if it continues...symptons of heart problem are varied and numersous--this alone is not significant
Re: Help...Honey has me worried..
Roxy used to pant like that at times for no apparent reason - our vet kept close tabs on her heart and it was okay. One thing you may want to do is have her thyroid function checked.
Re: Help...Honey has me worried..
Thanks both...will watch this more carefully for a while..otherwise she is herself...she is my kid.
Re: Help...Honey has me worried..
Mompaws, if it occurs again for no apparent reason or directly after a nap or in resting state, I wouldn't wait again. Get her seen and consider the ECG and full blood profiling if possible. Not trying to worry you, but it would be a safe-guard.....peace of mind.

MawPaws....if this is new for Honey I would definitely get it checked out. She is such a sweetheart. Hope she is ok.
Re: Help...Honey has me worried..
will do Traci and Joy- thanks... yes she is a sweetie for sure. Is there medicine or something they can do if a dog has heart trouble???
Re: Help...Honey has me worried..
Yes, but let's not jump the gun....just get her checked if this occurs again. Opting for an ECG will help your vet determine heart function, any possible blockages or will determine the need for additional diagnostics if warranted. Try not to worry, chances are, it was a one-time occurance, but just play it safe and have her checked if it happens again, particularly if soon after the first incident, or after a walk, etc.

MomPaws, I don't have any good advice about this, but Mr. Blue and I both wanted to send along our best wishes for Honey and you! Mr. Blue has decided that he likes those older female dogs, and wants the best for Honey, as do I

Thanks Mary- I am watching her closely right now...Honey says 'woof' to Mr. Blue
