Another trauma for Mythie to endure?

You know.... just when you think your out of the woods... this happens to our poor baby....

On the way to the vet today I found a lump on Mythie's back. When we got to the vet the vet looked at it and it seemed to be a scab so he pulled it back and found a large sore about the size of a large finger nail!! Then he found another one nearby.

So essentially what had happened was there must have been a small pocket of infection which dried up and then scabbed...

He thinks it may be from playing with the other cats, but they really haven't had any real physical contact except for the last 48 hours and the scab couldn't have come up and scabbed in just two days could it?

So, now that it's has scabbed, i'm wondering if Mythie will have these recurring pockets of infection all her life? Or is it just a worry now? And are they just appearing now because of the healing etc...

While we were talking about it with the vet outside he said that fat necrosis is very common in cats and he often has cats that he just can't treat anymore because the infection won't stop spreading, and the anti-biotics are not working...

Will this happen to Mythie?
I'm just not prepared to believe that IF(god willing it doesn't) it does keep coming back ... Surely there has to be a way to treat it? There has to be?
I'm really, really lost. We both are. Distraught.

I mean this could just go away,but what if it doesn't? Is there anything we can do now to prevent it from coming back? I think i speak for me and my fiancee when i say that we're prepared to do anything.

Does anyone have any sort of experience with this kind of thing? If you do, we'd be so greatful if you could share it with us...

not really sure, but it almost looks like cowpox (from what i know of it) although if this cat has been indoor only for a while, i doubt it. did you retain the fallen off article of hair and skin? might be wise to have your vet inspect that for potential virus/infection. if Mythie is on any steriods (for the other issue), it could exacerbate this condition.

being so large, i would of expected them to check it out further...perhaps i am jumping the gun a bit....guess i will see what others have to say.

Well he seemed quite sure it was just an infection... What bothers me is that they could come back any time. Surely there's a way to avoid it?

Jason could be on target with cowpox (also known as poxvirus in domestic cats)....have you recently received vaccination yourself? Is cowpox a common occurance in your area? Might want to ask your vet about that. I would also have suggested that if he in the least suspected poxvirus, he should have done a quick biopsy right then and there, or at least tried to send a sample off for a histopath examination. As Jason mentioned, corticosteroids are contraindicated to treat poxvirus. I would also ask when Mythie was last vaccinated for anything, as well as ask what injections were given in this area during her hospitalization that could have caused a reaction.

On the other hand, this could have been a wound related to the initial injury that went undetected (I'm still guessing Mythie was attacked by a dog or other animal, causing the various wounds). I would first try to get a histopathologic exam done on a sample, then treat with broad-spectrum antibiotics,...if there is no healing or there is no response to broad-spectrum antibiotics, then you need to evaluate it further and possibly test for immunodeficiencies, fungal or other viral disease.

Judging from the pic, it appears the skin is healthy, however, if these are recent skin wounds, you do need to rule out the above (immunological, etc), talk to your vet about this ASAP.

i would not be surprised at these thing occuring because there had to be some what of a systemic cutaneous (skin) infection, ie a pyoderma..i think these will heal up like the big lesion did but the cause would only be a guess...i sispect that Mythie might have to be on a cutaneous typoe of antibiotic for about a month, ie if it cultures out as Staph intermedius and the appropiate antibiotic, ie, trimethoprm,amoxi, ete......they may just be incidental and not reoccur....thier cause could be the cowpox that has been mention but am not familiar with that...could be injection sites, coud be insect bites....could be anything but i would not expect them to be a recurring problem but just a PIA incidental infection.....no way to predict...but a culture should be done and the sensitivy antibiotic could be used....personally i would treat these two topically untill more information is found....but i would not worry untill you see if anymore occur...can't be much of a help from here but i would still wait and not worry untill you see if any more form---and theymay not ever.....just wait..sorry, no help....

I hope Mythie recovers quickly, she is a fighter..that little girl has been through so much lately...And you too please hang in there..we are here for you... I know it's tough...but try to take it one day at a time..

I think that's what we'll have to do anywy as the vet doesn't want us to come back for another two weeks... I think this is so Mythie gets over her phobia of him... she really really really can't stand going to see them anymore... but if we find anymore of those sores we'll have to take her back anyway...

Well.....
She's racing around like a lunatic, climbing all the furniture, invading the bed when it is occupied, and eating like a very small miniature horse...
She's definetly better... She hasn't had any more lumps or bumps or sores... Her wound is almost completely closed now... I'll probably post a picture in this thread later today http://www.cathelp-online.com/phpBB2/vi ... c&start=15
