Cleaning detergents and my sweet furbaby Smokey

Post by LisaLisa »

My cleaning lady was here today and used the typical household cleaning agents (too many fumes). My poor baby Smokey had a difficult time breathing from the fumes. He was in a bit of respiratory distress. I immediately put on the air conditioning, opened the windows and got the entire dose of night time dose of Theodur in him (25 mg). He is much better, no more attacks and is quite alert.

I have been searching the webs and coming up with next to nothing concerning safe/less irritating cleaning products to use. He scared the life out of me..

I would greatly appreciate any input.

I've attached my previous post concerning his current medical work-up..

Update: I'm definitely having a bad kitty day...Smokey just almost went through the screen door at another cat  ...his cardiac reserve is still in good shape  ..and his brother Caz apparently jumped off the my 2nd floor deck to go exploring  ....just in time for Hurricane Isabel...off I go to find him..

But I love my boys..

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Jason...I'll make sure to review carefully.

BTW: Caz came sauntering home around midnight...lots of cats fights going on in the woods behind my townhouse. Thankfully, he was unscathed. Smokey had no further asthmatic episodes. Last night, I slept on the sofa in Smokey's room with my boys to make sure all was well. I have a combo office/spare room on my bottom floor which looks out to the woods behind the house. They both boys love it there..Smokey more so than Caz.

I'm hopefully for a peaceful weekend and doing some better searches for cleaning products.

Any ideas are still greatly appeciated.

Hi,
I have kids and a cat.
I have had to switch from the common household commericalized cleaners to more natural cleaning products because of all the respiratory probs we have here.
Do you have a Trader Joes near you, or a health food store? If yes, most of them sell more natural cleaning products. They are more expensive, but worth it!
Try these links:

Bobbie & zooey hide in the bedroom closet when the maids are here... maybe you should confine him while she's there just to be safe...

Thanks Catnipper for taking the time to help me. There is a Trader Joe's near my work so I'll check it out. The is a health store nearby too. I didn't think of them. The links look good too.. What do you use and do you find it cleans adequately?

Yzma..Thanks for the thought...I wish it was as easy as putting the kitties in a room and nothng more would happen..not this time though.

All will work out fine

Lisa, I read Jason's link, and I don't have a problem with most of the tips, save for garlic use for fleas (fine for dogs, I wouldn't use for cats at all, garlic can cause hemolytic anemia in cats).....so vinegar and water would be one choice for multipurpose cleaning.

Also, the link catniper gave you for Shaklee...I grew up with Shaklee products, and I would highly recommend the "Basic-H"..for general cleaning, it's biodegradeable, leaves no fumes or residue, and does the job of most other commercial cleaners.

Take some time to talk with your cleaning lady and explain to her your wishes where Smokey and other cats are concerned. Explain to her that the use of aerosols, and products like bleach, window cleaners, etc, are very very aggrivating to Smokey and you will NOT take the risks of his discomfort.

Try the Basic-H, I think you will be pleased with it, it's alittle pricy, but it's concentrated and requires dilution, alittle goes a LONG way...

Hang in there, know I'm pullling for Smokey, ....

Traci,

Again, thank you.. you are an angel. Rest assure, will not use the flea remedy...no additional pills other than the necessary ones for my boys.

Shaklee product is ordered..the charge card is getting a work out, but it will cost me less economically and emotionally in the long run..

I know your puliing for my Smokey... he is doing okay.. I'm not sure he knows he is sick..which is a good thing..

Take care.

Hi,
I'm coming in on the tail end of this, but I would like to day that I hope you have this resolved and that your week-end was much quieter! And I hope you can find some good cleaners that won't affect your kitties!
Kitty kisses,
Debbie
