cystitus

Post by jjaa »

Hi, My male cat had PU surgery about a month ago because of chronic
urinary blockage. He has since come down with yet another infection.
The DR. put him on antibiotics and anti-inflamatories(ammonil).
My friend suggested using Methigel which is supposed to keep the urine
more acidic. Does anyone have any experience with this? He is the
2,000 dollar cat so far and I am so frustrated. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. JJ

Hi,

Please consult with your vet prior to doing anything differently with your kitty. The surgery he had is a major surgery. I can't stress the importance to consult with your vet before making any changes to the care you are providing your kitty. Kitties that have this type of surgery are at higher risk for developing UTI's. He is still in the healing process right now too. This risk is present for the rest of his life.

I do have a few questions for you:

What type of crystals did your kitty have?

Do you know the pH of his urine currently?

Are you feeding him a vet prescribed diet specific to the type of crystals/stone he had ?

My cat Smokey had a p/u earlier this year. Thankfully, all is well in that area so far. Jason and D~ also have kitties we had this same surgery done, but there boys have had more problems with UTIs than my Smokey. Every kitty is dfferent though.

Hang in there..it can be financially difficult to take care of our furbabies.. you may be able to work out a payment plan with your vet..

Please keep us updated and the board is a great resource for obtaining information to discuss with your vet.

My vet didn't tell me what kind of chrystals he had, does that make a difference? But I am going to call him and ask about that and also his care. He and all my cats are eating CDS from Science Diet which was prescribed by the vet. I also try and get him to drink some clam juice because he doesn't drink enough water.
I have five other males and he is the only one that has this on going problem. He is such a big sweet boy I feel really sorry for him.
At the moment he is doing well but I would like to find something to help him not to maintain his health. Thanks, JJ

You need to know that urine acidifiers are contraindicated when given with a prescription diet that is already formulated for acidifying (as the C/D-s is).....if you supplement with an acidifyer while feeding a prescription diet or a diet already containing acidifiers, you will subject your kitty to oxalate stones, something you do not want to deal with. Acidifiers should only be used in cases where the diet is not sufficient, or that it is a last resort in an emergency situation (patient not responding to other medical managment)

Please do not feed clam juice. When on a prescription diet, feeding anything outside of it defeats the entire purpose of the diet for which it is intended. Ask your vet for canned C/D-s if appropriate, and try something different to encourage natural water intake. (move the water dish to a more preferrable location, use bottled water, consider a pet fountain, etc etc)

JJ,

If your furboy is being prescribed cd/s--then he had struvite crystals--the easier type to treat. Check out Jason's post to give you a little bit of information . And Tracey knows her stuff so please take it to heart. In my experience, Tracey's infomration and guidance has always been right on.

I know you really care about your kitty... and I wish the best for both of you. It's sometimes not easy.

Please keep us updated and let us know if you need any info..

What's your kitty's name--he can be a part of the p/u boys club.. 8)

Take care,
