We brought a six week old kitten home about 6 weeks ago. Our first cat was an adopted feral cat who was mostly outside but spent most afternoons and evenings in the house sleeping and bonding with us. She wasn't happy when the new one arrived, although I kept Twilight (the baby) in a room locked away for over a week when Midnight (the older cat) was inside. When we started to let Twilight roam, Midnight was quite aggressive with her and now would rather be outside than even come indoors. She actually hisses, growls and snaps at us humans, too! She comes home each day to eat, but if she comes inside she starts hissing without Twilight even being around.
What should we do? Will they ever get along?

If so, is there anyway you can keep her in where it is safe?
I have a five year old female and I adopted a two month old kitten. I isolated the kitten, because my female did not want anything to do with her at first. She hissed and ran away.
Eventually she warmed up to the kitten (who is now almost 5 months old) and started grooming her and sleeping with her. I will tell you that my kitten will still chase her and jump on her and she hisses and swats her.
THey are getting better and lay together on chairs and in beds now.
It took a lot of time and patience. Could your older cat stay inside possibly.

Twilight the kitten stays inside all the time only going out if we sit outside.
Midnight, the older cat, gets to sounding almost pained in her cry if we don't let her out of the house.
I don't want her to get too stressed, so we let Midnight out and don't see her all day or night until she wants to eat. We live in Seattle, so the weather is starting to get rainy. We were hoping that would be incentive for Midnight to stay inside - but not yet.
You said it took your two over 5 months to get along? Should we just keep doing what we're doing and be more patient?

patience is certainly one of the keys to this. feline introductions simply take time. mine took roughly 5-6 months (number increases as i remember the ordeal better) before you can "feel the love".Audrey wrote:You said it took your two over 5 months to get along?
