How do you disinfect bedding/carpet?

Post by Yzma »

I have a cat who is recovering from a large open wound, and the wound has been left to heal as an open wound...
We have her confined to the guest bed room and are trying our best to keep everything as clean and sterile as possible...

But how do we keep things like the rugs, the mattress etc clean/sterile?

So far this is what i have done...
1. we got some disinfectant from the vet, the kind they use at the surgery, diluted that as per the instructions and we sprayed a light mist on the mattress.
2. we've washed the mattress protector, the sheets, the comforter and everything that goes on top of the matress as well, the vet said it was okay to add a few drops of disinfectant to the load of washing...
3. we've cleaned the floor and all non-absorbent surfaces by spraying with the disinfectant and wiping with a wet towel...
4. we've removed the larger rug and replaced it with two smaller washable rugs that have been recently washed...
5. we're keeping ourselves pretty disinfected especially our hands and feet...
6. we're changing the top sheet, which is the sheet Mythie sits on most of the time twice a day...

is there anything else we should be doing?

we're thinking of borrowing one of those samitizer/sterilizer things that does the whole room from a friend... our vet has one, it looks like a vacuum cleaner but it cleans with steam...

is this necessary? are we forgetting anything?

we are particularly concerned about the carpets as there doesn't seem to be anything we can do to clean those... any ideas anyone?

i think all this sanitizing is somewhat over kill cause every time you enter the room, your skin will flake off with all the outdoors bacteria on the flakes....but these are normal harmless bacteria...these open sites rarely get reinfected...just normal sanitation, washing hands etc...

It sounds as though you are really being careful and doing a good job. The steamer may be a good idea too, but just be careful on what she lays. YOu can purchase large pads at a medical supply company or even those large incontinent pads at the drug store. I did this when my Honeybun had knee surgery and was confined to one room.

Good luck with you precious kitty and please let us know how she progresses with the healing.
