Amanda, my little smoke detector
We moved our grill out to the front of the house because we were painting the deck. It's not in it's normal place so Amanda became concerned. Then when smoke started coming out of it, hubby was making dinner, Amanda went nuts. She went to the farthest end of the yard and kept barking. It was her nervous bark that alerts me to lightning bugs in the yard or a humming bird is at the feeder. I went out and looked at her and couldn't help but laugh. I know if there is ever a fire, Amanda will be the first to let me know.

She looks like a sweet little girl.................They get freaked out when things are not where they should be.
Shelby can bark like crazy to let me know that a gum wrapper has blown onto my front lawn.

I love it. If mine barked everytime we moved or changed something I would be deaf!
Hmmm I wonder if it is the doggy equivelent of being "anal."

Mr. Blue's psycho nature comes out when he growls and barks at strange cars parked in the street. It seems like he's come up with a "map" of what cars belong in "his" neighborhood, and which ones are strange. Makes for interesting walks, occasionally!

In the case of my Doberman, it may be anal.
Shelby is a very neat and orderly dog who likes things in their place. She will sidestep mud in the yard and does not like to get her paws wet. She's a bit of a fluff, but she's 12 and there's no use trying to change her.
My previous male Dobie used to step in his own crap once a day....this one has done that only once or twice in 12 yrs.
She's almost human.

Re: Amanda, my little smoke detector
One time we were walking in the wee hours of the morning. Amanda came across Santa's sleigh. She started barking like a lunatic at the plastic reindeer. When we actually had 3 deer cross the street in front of us, she stood there in silence. Which was probably a good thing. Amanda is afraid of the fishtanks so I know she is just plan nuts. Is that a medical term?
Re: Amanda, my little smoke detector
She is such a beautiful dog, AM - smart, too, huh! (Ignore the nuts part) Honey did something last night- the cell phone was in my purse and I didn't hear it ringing...she keep bugging me till I came out in the kitchen to answer it- thought that was neat!

I think you're both wrong - this is normal herding dog behavior - isn't Amanda a Border Collie? The herders MUST alert their flock to danger. The will go insane only if the CAN'T perform that duty. Anything that moves might be a wolf or fox - serious danger to the sheep , and smoke, without any doubt signifies danger.TheSkeptic wrote:Hmmm I wonder if it is the doggy equivelent of being "anal
Good girl Amanda!

Amanda is crushed, yes she is a herding dog but not a border collie. She is a Bernese mountain dog. I would not want to insult the intelligence of a border collie by adding Amanda to the list. Her motto is don't hate me because I'm beautiful.
