screw worms are maggots of calitroga macelaria (man that is a word i learned 50 years ago)...i am not sure if they are in India, but they have been eliminated in the USA...they are maggots of a certain fly that will chew on live fleash but i doubt that your altitude will allow them to be present. i know you can't stop the cat from licking but try to keep it occupied to at least decrease it...it doesn't really help and probably won't hurt and exposure to the air is better than bandaging....how bout taking a photo about every 5 days and post them when it is closed up...might be a good learning experience for everyone, including me

she's in an elizabeth collar so she can't lick at all... and we've started disinfectin everything with lysol to minimize the bacteria that might be present...
Sure, i can post a pic every five days or so... em... how long do these wounds take to heal? or at least get to a point where it isn't gaping anymore... can you tell? ...?

Please know that lysol is toxic to cats. You might want to switch to bleach and water that will kill anything and be less harmful to Mythie.

Traci would staph infection be a concern here?

staph and strep could be a previous factor but with it wide open like that there is very little chance of either becoming involved....those bugs ususally start in a closed wound, they may have been a factor but no more....time a=nd a little scientific neglect are the most
inportant factors now--mom nature will cause that wound to granulate or look like lots of little bubbles (proud flesh) and this will become a bed for the skin to grow over.....patients is a factor...

Please be careful disinfecting, you may want to ask the vet what to use, maybe plan bleach and water solution and then rinse, rinse, rinse and let dry before any animals walk on the surface.

I wish you all the luck in the world with this precious kitty. I know you are doing everything you can for her.

We never asked the vet about the bill until yesterday.... when we picked her up... We were expecting something in the region of 6-7000Ringgit, but it only turned out to be 2289!! And even it had been more than 7000 we would have paid it... I hope there never comes a day when money is a deciding factor for our vet bills..\\\\\]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]g... that was Mythie i think she was trying to add something to this post... the only time i ever considered putting one of our furry friends down was with a very very sick kitten of ours... she passed on a day later anyway... cat flu...

sometimes people ask me why i'm a vegetarian an i say 'because i hate plants' but it's actually because 'i love animals' [more than people]

Yzma= yease ma, that's how you pronounce it...

Cheers Davet!

One other thing is this.... Should we be feeding her what is appropriate for her weight, or free feeding.... we don't mind free feeding, but the thing is that Mythie tends to over eat... so how much is enough?

she's currrently on Felidae, which is human grade kibble... doesn't taste too bad actually

i don't know if you know this but she also has diahrrhea but she's on medication for it. Now the vet has done blood and stool work for this but he can't find anything suspicious... well i should know by this morning if she still has it or not... shes been on the meds for about 24hrs now...I just gave her about 1.5 tablespoons of boiled pumpkin in her breakfast...

her flatulence...
is this snything to be concerned about?

Yzma -

I have tried to follow the events of your cat and have some suggestions for you to add to what others have already suggested.
  1. Have vet try to close up wound one more time.
  2. Find out about injectable vet penicillin (is this being used?), baytril will be helpful to prevent urinary tract infection (excellent for this situation).
  3. Need to get specific nursing care instructions to keep wound clean and dry, need to be committed to that twice a day and every day.
  4. Keep clean paper towels only in litterbox, and keep box spotless every day.
  5. Keep confined and away from other cats.
  6. Don't boil the pumpkin, use canned pumpkin only (not pie filling). Add 1-2 teaspoons to food once a day or ask vet about using metamucil to help firm stools.
  7. Followup with vet by phone every other day and visual exam twice a week if possible to make sure further infection is not ocurring.
  8. Again, would be better to have vet close this wound one more time before releasing.
PS: My girlfriend works at a vet clinic ;)
