Need Advice: More than one cat?

I just got a 5mnth old cat a couple months ago, and she lived fine with other cats in the cage at the petstore when I got her. I brought her home and everything is all fine and dandy, but then she seems to get lonely alot--or so other cat lovers told me--and I got another cat--also a female, a bit older though--to keep her company. It's been two days and the older cat keeps hiding under the bed or in my cupboards, and my first cat just won't stop hissing at the new cat.

I've been told this can last for a couple days, or even weeks, but I want to know if this is really normal or if it isn't a cat-match?
