What do you think is the best way to treat a "skunked d

Hello all,

Fortunately, I don't need this for Mr. Blue (or at least not yet!) We met a lady last night walking her German Shepherd/mix dog, and the dog had been shaved on one side of her body. The woman kept on the other side of the street, but told us her dog had been skunked the day before. I know there's a ton of them in our neighborhood, and I sure hope Mr. Blue never messes with one, but just in case I want to be prepared. Does shaving actually do any good? Had another person last summer telling me that Dawn dish soap was really good for cutting the odor. I figured I'd ask here, just in case I have to treat Mr. Blue for this.

Here you go...

1 qt. 3% H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide)
1/4 c. baking soda
1 t. liquid dish soap

Work through fur well, then rinse with clean water, may have to reapply once more.

If all else fails, ask your vet for a bottle of Skunk-Off, but also ask for an opthalmic ointment to protect Mr Blue's eyes when using this.

Shaving might help to reduce residue in the fur, but the above solution can work just as well. Just rinse with clean water after the application.

I sure don't want him messing with a skunk, but I'm not sure he'd be able to help himself if he saw one out in the bushes in our back yard.

i have tried that solution in my grooming shop, it worked no better than tomato juice, skunk off worked better than anything but can cause allergic reactions.

Traci's formula is 100% the way to go. I speak from experience. Both my Airedale and Chessy got nailed twice last year, from a distance of about a foot (I unfortunately benefitted from being too close to them). One good dose with rubbing it in and then rinsing is all it takes. Use a sponge though....much more effecient and you get more of this on the dog.

Newfie, it's always worked for me, I never recommend tomato juice, one usually has to reapply it several times, plus, it's awful messy. Tomato juice really doesn't absorb the odor like H202 can...Of course it all depends on just how soaked the dog gets...

hehehe I wish I had know about Skunk-off a long while ago. My dog caught a skunk while on a camping trip about ten years ago. Whoa-she was smelling badly even after a tomatoe juice bath and several baths a week for a month. ( I never even thought about using peroxide, baking soda) -Patrick and Rags.

I dont know guys, i have used that mixture on samoyeds and newfs, and sporting dogs, and it just did not take the smell out as good as skunk off, in fact i was not impressed at all with it, so i quit doing skunk dogs! LOL
but if it worked for you that is great!

Newfie, maybe because of all the fur! Plus, size of dog...in any case, use what works best for you
