rocky's fever

Post by jason »

fyi.

rocky has been quite lethargic for the past 4-5 days. he also has a couple out-of-the-litter-box urinations. last night i noticed some milky white substance in his eye and today he vomitted digested food with no hair.

enough guessing on my part and the temperature reading at home wasnt smooth or successful, so he went to the vet tonight.

after gathering some facts from me, they took his temperature and it was 104.6-F. the doc noticed that his bladder was empty, he was not dehydrated (gum color returns to pink in one second after light compression) but appeared to have quite a bit of gas.

the conclusion (at this point) was a large hairball. she gave him an injection of dipyrone (0.5ml sq) to deal with the fever (its an antihistamine) and i was directed to give him fairly large doses of laxatone once a day for a week (he loves that stuff anyhow, what a treat).

if fever (or his lethargy) is still around tomorrow, its back to the vet...otherwise we keep an eye on him.

Jason~

Sorry to hear about Rocky. :(

Honeybun also vomits undigested food when constipated.
She has had an enema. My vet pescribed Vetasyl fiber caps which I mix in her wet food in the morning. This works wonders to pull the hair through the system. Of course I also give Laxatone to both girls.

I hope Rocky will be better soon. Please post updates ok. 8)

ok, talked with the vet.

blood work was just fine. xrays showed fairly large amount of matter in small intestine. enema got him started ;)

doc has prescribed lactulose 2ml 3 times a day and also use laxatone if he will take it. also recommended some can food temporarily.

will pick him up in about an hour and at that time a urinalysis will be done to rule out possible infections (he is post p/u).

bottom line at this point is simply a good amount of constipation that is either slow moving or not much at all on its own.

rocky had an infection in addition to the constipation. giving him the lactulose and baytril in addition to some canned cd/s.

gheesh. he is home now...im taking care of him and am considering to take up a paper route ;)

im thinking of starting a routine of laxatone on the weekends (keep hairballs moving) and canned food twice a week (keep stool from getting too hard). sound like an idea?

Yeah Rocky's home and starting on the upswing.... =D> \:D/

I don't know about hairball treatments...but I'm guessing you only feed limited canned food to Rocky? Is there a specific reason??
