just updating on my found kitty

Post by foundakittyNYC »

She's doing so well and getting so fat.

Question 1: Do cats know when they are full? She is always wanting her bowl to have food in it. She's getting so fat, but when food gets low, she starts meowing to have more put in there.

Question 2: HOW does she know what time it is? She wakes me up on the weekends when I don't get up at my normal time. She now sleeps in our bedroom because if we don't let her in, she sits at our bedroom door and cries - meow - meow - it's such a distressed meow - like she needs to be near us. Then if I don't get up at the time I normally do, she licks my forehead with her scratchy tongue.

Question 3: What's the deal with the bathroom? She cries to come in with me. I have to let her come sit in my lap when I go to the bathroom! Then this morning I was taking a shower - she JUMPS IN THE TUB....is getting wet- and just looks up at me - and watches me take a shower - - such a weird cat. Just sitting there and looking at me like What are you doing? Before she jumped in she was doing that distressed meow. I stuck my head around the curtain and told her it was ok. Next thing I know, kitty is in the tub.

She's in my lap right now - sleeping. I don't know why she is so attached to me and my son - but she has to have a human beside her or be in a human's lap all the time.

As far as the weight, I'm sure Traci will, uh... weigh in on that one. But in general, cats should be able to regulate their own food intake. You should probably take her in to the vet for a weight check and recommendations if you are worried.

All the other stuff is entirely normal.

One of my boys, Pat, understands the alarm clock and snooze button. He starts nudging me and tapping me and sticking his cold wet nose on my face when the alarm goes off. But then I hit the snooze button and he lays down next to me until it goes off again. I usually get up between 7 and 8, and on the weekends he won't let me sleep much past 9.

And they all have to be in the bathroom. Pat tried to do the lap thing for a while, but I was able to convince him that that was not an appropriate lap. Now he hops up on the counter (right next to the toilet) and taps me on the shoulder if I don't pet him. The other two walk back and forth on the floor in front of me wanting attention. When I take a shower, they usually all sit outside the shower, one on the mat, one on the toilet lid, and one on the counter. In my old house that had a curtain (now I've got sliding doors), they would hop up between the two curtains and stare at me through the clear curtain.

They follow me around the house all the time. Sometimes it's kind of creepy, because they will all be sleeping in one room with me, then I get up and go to another room. A few minutes later I'll look around, and they're just sitting there in a circle around me... Sort of like a horror film scene.

So your baby girl is normal. She's just happy to be with her family. Good to know that not all cats are aloof, right?

Thanks. You made me laugh.

She'll be weighed tomorrow at the vet. She has to go in to be weighed and get her second set of giardia & roundworm medication.

Then when that is over, we will get her final vaccinations. Then in another month, we will get her tested for FIP, FIV, FeLV and spayed and have a microchip placed in her.

I wish I had gotten a kitty sooner. This girl is just the sweetest baby we've had. And my son adores her. I didn't know if he'd take care of a kitty, but he loves her and always makes sure she has enough food and water. I take care of the litter box, though, since she had the giardia and roundworms. I clean it every time she pees or poops.

So - we are almost finished with the medications and everything we needed to do to get her better - and she'll just be a normal kitty then. I saw that to adopt a kitty is $100 - - that would have been much cheaper than what we've put into this kitty - - but I would NOT change what I did. She was so sick and needed someone to take her. Now it's really nice to see how well she is and to enjoy her.

And who needs television when you have a cat. This thing keeps me laughing and entertained. She has so many toys and loves to play - it's so fun to play with her - I feel like a child again - playing with an interactive toy.

You didn't mention giardia in your first post, when was this detected, and how? (btw, giardia treatment is daily treatment with Albon or Flagyl). So I don't understand why your vet is treating giardia every two weeks?

The roundworm treatment (strongidT) is to be given in one dose, then 14 days later, a second dose.

She should have been tested for FELV/FIV on the first vet visit using a snap test, was this not done? Testing is required before vaccinations! If there is any indication or suspicion of exposure to a feline viral infection, then testing can be repeated, usually 4 weeks after the first test.

Again, do NOT allow your vet to vaccinate for FIV, or FIP. The only vaccinations that should be given are FVRCP, FELV and Rabies, all spaced apart.

Was she dewormed for tapeworms as well? If not, it should be done.

The weight issue, what are you feeding her?

If she has parasites (either roundworms or tapeworms or both), this could be leading to a distended abdomen and may not be "weight gain" as in overeating, but evidence of parasites. If she has roundworms or tapeworms, then she of course will have a ravenous appetite until the worms are eradicated. (in simple terms, they reside in the intestine, and will "eat" whatever she eats, therefore causing an increased appetite).

Hi,
The giardia and roundworms was found when they took her poop and sent it to a lab ($125!) And then the meds is some white med that is given once a day for 5 days and then 2 weeks later once a day for 5 days. I forget the name of the med.

They said they will test her next month and that tests sometimes are not accurate if you test before the kitty is 6 months old.

I'm getting confused by your posts (sorry, trying to be helpful here).

Oct 7, they said your kitty had roundworms, but didn't treat them (according to your earlier posts)

Oct 9, apparently she had another exam and you were supposed to get the fecal results then. I assume the 9th was when they started treating the giardia? And dewormed for roundworms then?

Giardia treatment shouldn't be resumed two weeks after the inital treatment unless a new fecal exam detects giardia again.

Testing for FELV/FIV using the snap test can be done on kittens as early as 10 weeks of age. A second test a month later can be repeated. If the test(s) produce a negative result, chances are, the negative is accurate....it is a positive on a test that is concerning and warrants a second test, or an ELISA-specific sent to an outside lab. Your vet knows this,....he also should know to test for FELV/FIV before vaccinating, as I said before. If your vet doesn't know this, then he's behind the times.

Any chance you can see a new vet?
