... and I'm pretty excited about both of them! Next week it will be Leader Dogs for the Blind, and then in July the Detroit police K9 unit will be there. I've been thinking of questions for both (my hubby says he's going to call and warn them that the Question Lady is planning on showing up I find both types of dog tasks absolutely fascinating, and I think it's wonderful that their talents have been put to these uses. For the Lead Dogs for the blind, I'm curious about whether or not a person's current dog can be trained as a leader, if his/her person ends up going blind. for the K9 handlers, I'm curious about the types of tasks their unit does, and how they look at the issue of trust, like how easy/difficult is it for the police to trust the instincts, ID's, etc. of their dogs. So expect to hear reports from me on both of them!
Sounds interesting to me too, Mary
Especially the first one....my instinct tells me that it takes a good deal of time to train a dog for that, and it is done as a puppy,so it may not serve the purpose. My Mom at one time was going to take in a Keeshond, who did not pass the requirements for this and needed a home. I know he was in a special school...there was nothing wrong with him...he just failed at some particlar test. But that is a good question, and I would be interested in hearing what they say!
