about a year ago, we took in a neighborhood stray cat--who we named lefty. it wasn't long before we relized she was pregnant. once she had her litter, we kept 2 of the 5. a male cat, named rooster, and a female named dixie. with a few exceptions, the cats live in pretty good harmony. rooster is pretty dominant, but lefty ultimately is the head of the kitty household. so dixie is somewhat timid. she stays really close to her mama, but she and rooster still play and get along with the occasional little spat.
the cats are indoor cats, but the other nite rooster got out of the house--he was probably gone for about 10-12 hours. before we found him, both the female cats were being especially friendly--dixie more so than ever. when we brought rooster back in, all h*** broke loose. dixie immediately disappeared and lefty was hissing at rooster. it was if they didn't even remember him at all. whenever rooster comes anywhere near dixie, she hisses and spits something fierce. she doesn't seem to be afraid of lefty, but lefty will hiss at dixie whenever she approaches lefty. as for rooster, he doesn't have a clue as to what's going on. he has tried to approach the other cats--in a very friendly way--but neither one of them will have a thing to do with him. is this just something we have to let them work out on their own or is there something we can do?

oh, by the way, all the cats have been spayed and neutered.

The girls must be picking up very unfamiliar scents on Rooster from being who-knows-where. I would bathe him well and start with an introduction period.

You should get Rooster to your vet for an exam to ensure he didn't sustain any injuries while he was gone. If he is not vaccinated or those vaccinations are not up-to-date, I would strongly advise you get that done (as well as the other cats)..immediately.
