I've always thought it lovely the different purrs that cats have. All 5 of mine have different purrs:
Frodo - she's a steady, soothing, somewhat loud but not overly so. Her purr is most comformting and she purrs a lot!!
Gizmo - He is the loud purrer of our family. His purr could wake the dead, I did you not...loud and very steady...did I say he was loud? Look at him and he purrs. Take him to the vet and he purrs. He drools when he purrs. Boy does he drool when he purrs.
Khanada - In the 3 years that she has been here I have probably heard her purr only a few times. She's just not a purrer and when she does you can barely hear her. It's easier to feel the vibration than hear her.
Willow - She's my breathy purrer. Her purr sounds like someone breathing through their teeth almost. But it's not a harsh sound, it's very comforting. She mostly purrs at night and in the morning, when I go to bed and get up. She's also the pressie queen
Cricket - Her purr doesn't get heard often either. About the only time she purrs is when she is tired and curled up on your lap sucking on her own nipple...yes you heard me right, sucking her own nipple. The darn cat carries her own "security blanket" around with her. Strangest thing I have ever seen! She has a very soft but audible purr.

Well, let's see. Mister Kister (aka Brutus Beefcake) is the lover of the family, and lays beside me each night purring. His is a fairly loud purr, but steady and soothing.
I have very seldom heard Bagheera purr. Riley is a softer but steady purring when he is extra content. Oreo the spooky boy has never purred for me, but Amber says he does when he sleeps with her. I have yet to hear Velcro purr also, and he is usually in the bed at night too!

Ok...starting with the oldest.....
Gypsy is 12 and still purrrrs alot...she meows at you to get your attention first, then rubs her head into your hand and begins a loudmeowy kind of purrr
Gump looks like a Siamese/PErsian mix, and is a bit more standoffish, but when you can get him to purrrr, he will do so for only a short time, while laying on his back in your arms, but then is soon enough ready to move on to his own perch somewhere and be left alone...
Cuddles was an abandoned stray that Mom found huddled in a snowtorm under her lilac shrubs...it took Cuddles about 3 years before we even heard a purrrr from her, and that was not until we brought in some orphaned newborns this summer and she took to them...it still takes alot to get her to purrr and it is very soft...but you can feel her motor or hear it if you press your ear against her side...
Sarah does this little "meeee" kind of meow, and even when she purrrrs, she keeps saying "meeee" in between her purrrs
Callie is so standoffish, she is the one who lives above the refrigerator...2 shelves up there...she comes down for food, water. bathroom and every so often, when the mood strikes her, she will sit on top of the microwave and when you walk by, she will reach out to you with her paw and pull you over to her...a sign she wants some attention...then she will let you scratch her ears, and rub her head into your hand and purrrr quite loudly...but then after maybe a minute of this, she swats you away and turns to leave...I never hav efigured her out...
Skittles....she is a talker to no end...she chirps, meows, purrrsss...all mixed together...and when you talk to her, she will look into your face adn talk back...her eyes get big, her ears move, she turns her head...as if she is actually carrying on an entire conversation with you!
Tiglet never shuts up either...and she is never still for more than a few seconds...even in her sleep, she is always moving...squirming...you look at her and she purrrs and squeaks and wiggles...when she was spayed and we took her to remove the stitches, my son held her front paws, I held her back paws and the vet held her tummy...every snip we had to rearrange her again...not because she wanted to get away..she was just purrrring and squirming to no end...
Baby Roo...he is my baby for sure...I hand raised him from a rediculously tiny thing that should not have been alone in the tall grass along the field where we found him...he is by very biggest cat, I swear he is part bobcat!!...He alwasy seems to be congested, even though he always checks out fine at the vet...he did have to have double fangs removed and the vet said the roots were quite far into his sinus cavity, which could be causing some issues...he sneezes alot...but his purrr is the breathy, raspy through his mouth alomst kind of purrr that will tickle your neck and ear....and he keep breathing and snorting while he purrs...he loves to snuggle against your neck and bury his head under hair or chins...every morning he comes into the bathroom and gets on the ledge by the tub and waits for me to turn and pat my shoulders...his eyes get bright, he begins to purrrrr...slowly stands on his hind legs and places his front paws on my shoulders, then pulls himself up into my arms to cuddle and breath in my ear!
Then we have the foster kittens...
Majik is the sleek shiny black male, and he is more elusive, but when you pick him up, he will immediately roll over in your arms for a tummy rub and begins a slow steady purrrrr...
Sissy just purrrrs ans rubs her mouth against your hand any time she gets the chance....she is as easy going as he is timid...
There..that is 10, right?!...yep...all counted for....

Okay...
Chauncey: You look at him and he purrs....loudly...he also could wake the dead...he has in fact jumped on the bed while we've been sleeping and start purring, only to wake us both up. He also purrs constantly!!!
Chessa: Will only purr for me And only when she's curled up in my lap or laying on me.
Chairis: She's our "breathy" purrer...usually she purrs quietly, unless she is really in a mood for attention, when she gets alot louder and breathes harder and smooshes with her paws!

Isn't it interesting how most of our cats in one household have different purrs...but compared with others cats the purrs are similar (does that make sense?) In other words many seem to have a loud purrer, a breathy purrer and a not to frequent purrer. It's cool hearing about all your "purrbabies"

Caspurr - has a medium purr, but once she starts, it takes a LOT to make her stop (not that I have ever tried or wanted to try ^-^)
Rolly - has a very loud purr like a car engine; his purring is usually accompanied by the rubbing of a wet nose on my face and drooling all over me.
Mollie - likes to open his mouth ever so slightly when he purrs, which almost amplifies it. His purr is between Caspurr's and Rolly's.
...............
LinZ - owns 3 motors with legs
