Drinking Fountains

Post by Cleo »

Does anyone use these? I don't find any below the cost of 30 bucks and all have to be plugged in but there's flooding in my home at every water bowl. The kittens use the bowls as a bath and even if I put a smaller bowl down, they tip it to roll around in on the floor. I know I read in another post that this is something they'll hopefully grow out of but I'd like to speed up the process.

Thoughts? Comments? Advice?

Thanks!

I had one...I cannot remember which one, but within a month the pump clogged up and stopped working...and I used ONLY bottled water in it...
The cats did use it and liked it, for the short amount of time it worked...

So I went back to just a water dish, and mopping spills and filling dishes...much easier than pumps and filters...

My brother keeps the sink faucet in their basement bathroom running all the time at a trickle because he has one who prefers to drink from a faucet...is this an option for you?

Cleo, I wonder if you could start them on a no-tip bowl like this one:

If they master it without the bathing and playtime incidents, then graduate them onto a water-fountain. With kitties who love to play in water, wouldn't be a good idea to give them a fountain with a chord until they understand the dish is for drinking only.

Thanks guys. I'll put the money towards their food instead.

Tambrey, my shower head leaks so I leave the handle/hose down with a dish under it that fills up quickly that they have a go at. There I don't mind because it's in the shower.

Traci, I could try those dishes for the tipping part of it but big or small, tip or not, they splash with their front legs so I guess I'll keep the squeegy tied to my hip. :)

Well I don't want to burst your spirits, LOL....but one of mine never grew out of that. He still plays in the water...in his water dish, in the kitchen sink, in the bathroom sink, in the tub, in the shower....yes, you guessed it, it's Cody the problem child

I try to let him drink out of the faucets when he feels the urge, this allows the others to be able to have their water de-Cody-fied.

Well then, I guess I'll be teaching my crew how to use a mop *LOL*

What I did do was buy these Rubbermaid Take-A-Long big tray thingys and put the water bowls in them. The floor and surrounding areas still get splashed but at least I don't have any rivers running....for now.

Hi Cleo,

When Bamm Bamm was a puppy he once emptied his water dish by splashing in it...it was one of those water dishes with the bottle attached so I came out to a flood in the kitchen with Bamm Bamm sitting in it with a big smile on his face...."Look Mom...I made my own swimming pool!". We switched to a smaller bowl and he did eventually grow out of playing with his water. Good luck with the kittens! ps...would love to be see you teaching them to mop...they'd probably love the mop!

Thanks Joy. These kittens love the strangest things. You know those Pounce treat bags that you tear the tops off leaving a sliver of wrapper? Well kitten Mitzi doesn't care for the treats inside the bag but LOVES to swat around and play with the wrapper strip!!

I got my cats a fountain from Drs Foster and Smith last year for Christmas, I think it was around $40. Both my cats were scared of it at first so I moved it away from their food dish and into another room. Once they were brave enough to get close to it they never went back to their old bowl! They love it and I've never had a problem with it. :)
