Gremlin & Yoda in Their New Home

Post by Tambrey »

Their new momma sent me an email to update me on my...their...babies...here it is in its entirety:
The kittens are very well and Gremlin (now known as Audrey after Audrey Hepburn) is getting almost fat!! She has been eating alot, but she looks wonderful and is very energetic and playful. I often wear dresses or skirts in the summertime, and she loves to run under my skirt and play with the hem. She also loves to play soccer all over the house. Yoda (now known as Lucas or Luke) had a sore paw one day and was limping slightly. Neither Meghan nor I know why, however. The problem was short-lived however, and he's back to romping with us and with his sister. Lucas LOVES the fur rug I have in our bathroom, he kneads it and purrs and nuzzles it like he no doubt did his mother. They are training very well with the water bottle, but Lucas did climb up on the couch one day (a no-no in our house) and looked guiltily at me. I said firmly "no" and he got right off. Meghan decided to give Audrey a bath yesterday. Poor kitty!! Meghan also decided to try to use the blow dryer and traumatized Audrey. So Meghan simply towel dried her and let me play. I asked if she bathed Lucas and she said "Are you kidding? He went crazy!" This morning I turned on the blow dryer for myself and forgot about Audrey's harrowing experience. She must have jumped two feet off the ground and took off immediately. Needless to say, I'll be more sensitive in the future. A good friend of mine recommended a vet, so they will meet their new doctor soon. I'll keep you updated periodically on their progress. Hope all is well with you, D and C.
Soooo....looks like my job is done...and successful...I just wish the others could have made it to find such wonderful homes...but I know they are at the Bridge with their Momma, Peek, and other siblings...

Thanks....it is rewarding to know they are doing so well...especially Gremlin aka Audrey with all the health issues she had...dehydration, pneumonia and so many other things...

Now....we are working on taming 5 feral kittens that 2 different mommas have on our front porch and in garage

The kittens I raised before, their grandma has two over here, we have managed to catch each one once, so we know that the all gray one is a boy, and the grey/black and white one is a girl :)

There is also a tortuiseshell momma with 3 kittens we have also managed to catch once each...of course the long haired tortuiseshell one is a girl, then there is a long haired all black girl and a short haired all black with a white throat male.

We have managed to get them to willingly come to our feet, but we can only catch them if they are busy eating and we are fast enough to grab a scruff and lift them up, in which case they curl into a fetal position as my hubby holds them in his hand...LOL...he keeps ahold of the scruff, but supports their body with his other hand and we all gently pet and talk to them...

If we can tame them....we will be looking for homes for them too!

I hope so :)

We keep debating on getting the ferals spayed/neutered and the local vet said he would give us a discount. If each family on our dirt road took one it, the cost to us all would not be much (less than $100 for spay/neuter and a round of shots, worming and general checkup)

However, we live with a grainery on this dirt road, and corn/bean fields in the back, so the ferals do help with the mice/rat population...they are all healthy and any kittens we have ever managed to tame and bring into our own homes or foster out have always checked out clean as far as AIDS, Leukeima, etc...

the two mothers who have the kittens over here right now are wonderful mommas and always have one healthy litter a year, so the population is not overrun either, and they usually only have 2-3 each. The black and white one (Friendly) has her babies under the grainery, and the guys there know her and watch out for her...she will keep them hidden until they are at least 3 months old, before she starts to bring them out for us to see, and she nurses them for close to 6 months...
The tortuiseshell momma (Snickers) seems to prefer an old doghouse at the neighbor's to have her litters, and again, she keeps them in there for the first 8-10 weeks before they ever venture outside....

Howver, with the mommas being so seclusive and protective is why we have such a hard time catching and taming them for good homes!

My mom has an appointment tomorrow to bring in a long haired silvery-grey male (Smokey) who is a little over 2 years old for a playmanjte for the one she brought home earlier in the year...he will be neutered and shots and worming and all that fun stuff...stay at the vets for a day or two, then home to her house to live inside forever with his brother, Shiloh.

One less feral to worry about this winter :)

This just i from their momma:
Lucas and Audrey are ok. Lucas is a little devil every now and then. He will get neutered in about two weeks. Dr. Wagner said Audrey could be spayed any time, once she reaches 3 pounds or more, which judging from how round her tummy is now, I think she must be at least 3 pounds. They get the run of the house most of the day, but as they (Lucas especially) has not yet learned the chair and couch are off limits, they do spend 2-3 hours in the bathroom napping in their fleece lined basket between my lunch break and when Meghan gets home from school. Lucas knows he's not to climb on the furniture, as he only does it when he thinks neither Meghan nor I see him, and gets a very guilty look when he's caught! He is an outstanding leaper, too outstanding. He leaps up and hangs in the air by his claws in one of my curtains, which gets me pretty excited. I can't believe he can leap that high, even though I know cats can jump. Audrey likes to give Meghan and I kisses, but also occasionally gets too playful and nips at our noses!! She also will lick off her brother when he gets squirted with the water bottle for misbehaving. Audrey is still terrorized by the sound of the blowdryer, so I have to be careful, but Lucas loves it. He likes to have the air on low blowing on his back and sides. What a goofy cat...
