Thank you, Mr & Mrs Idiot Owner (Warning-Graphic)

Post by Traci »

This is a little guy whom I met about 2 years ago as a young kitten. He started hanging around my yard and garden and started coming to eat almost every day and explore the garden. He feels safe here. Pics taken just two weeks ago:

OOPS, look sideways.

I am almost sure he is owned, but have never seen him go to a particular house. He is usually in great shape, fur clean and silky, ears clean, etc. Then I started having to catch him and fix his absesses, treat his perpetual cuts and scrapes. Someone shaved mats out of his fur over the summer. Who uses clippers on a cat who also doesn't own such cat? Not very often, right?

I hadn't seen him for a few days. Last night, my neighbor lady finds him huddled in a box on her porch. She rushes him over to me. Can I help him? Can I take him to the vet? (do I have extra money for everyone else's cats?)

I take a look at him, bring him in, flush his wounds, and determine this is not a job I can do at home. He goes in for an emergency vet surgery (at my expense) and I bring him back home when he comes out of anesthesia. (unknown owner = animal shelter, except on my watch).

This is post-surgery. After debridement of necrotic tissue, there is not enough viable healthy skin to close with sutures, it must be left open. It's going to take at least two months to start healing. He's in my guest bath, not feeling too well right now. He's so sweet, so trusting, so loving.

Thank you, mr and mrs idiot owner, for not keeping your kitty indoors, for not bothering to notice your kitty has a wound that isn't going to heal on it's own, for not neutering, microchipping, much less attempting to put a collar on for identification. For letting him run loose so OTHER people can worry and pay for your idiocy!

Oh Traci!! Oh how horrible that this poor kitty had to go through this  I am glad you were there for him, even thought it was at your expense. Bless his heart. I agree with you about idiot owners. Some people shouldn't be allowed to have animal companions. They see them as disposable and just don't care. This is just awful!

Thank you for taking such good care....

Poor, sweet little guy... I can't even begin to imagine how much that must hurt. My heart breaks for him. I'm so glad you're there for him. His owners don't deserve him.

He's been resting heavily today and tonite, but has pain meds and had an injection of convenia so I don't have to mess with oral antibiotics, thank goodness. Sleeping in his carrier and using the litterbox, he's such a good boy!

I have no idea what I'm going to do with him. I'm searching for the owner but have my doubts. I am at my limit for the cats. I'll have to check my already exhausted resources and hope to find a good home for him.

Gosh, if I thought you were within driving distance, I'd offer to foster him until he was back to health and could be adopted out. I don't know where you live for certain, but I'm pretty sure it's not close enough to metro Detroit to transport a kitty with an open wound. :(

Traci.....how awful for him but lucky he has you....that convenia is an awesome medicine...and it seems to work very well the times I have asked the vet to use it....

slvr, thank you. No, you're not close enough

I have no problem fostering and treating him, but I do have a problem with the local "rescues" and AC here.

Traci - you're an angel on earth. Bless you for doing this. I'm sure your neighbor knows you're a vet tech, as well as the neighborhood "cat lady", which is why she asked for your help. That's a really nasty-looking wound. In the earlier pictures he is such a pretty boy. With your care, he should be back to looking that way soon. I hope the idiots who own him don't find him. I'm sure he'll be much better off in any home you can find for him that you feel is acceptable.

Thanks, Karen, and for the words of encouragement.

Yes, the neighbor knows, as does the whole neighborhood. That doesn't excuse why she and everyone else can't chip in and help these cats. This particular neighbor also lets her cats out, but thinks they are somehow safe. Save for the absesses they occasionally get, and not noticing them until I call her up to inform her and save for the frantic calls I get on occasion because one goes missing. There's at least 3 such ladies in my immediate vicinity who just absolutely love and adore their cats, but keep letting them out. One lady has lost over 3 or 4 cats in the last 3 years, I have one of them. I ranted about another here not long ago who had to bail her cat out of AC, and just now, after 3-4 years, got kitty neutered and vaccinated. I can't change them, I know that. I don't even want anything to do with these people (although I do my best to remain civil)

I did put up ads, photos etc, but am not confident an owner will come forward. My guess, they'll see the ads and think as long as I'm taking care of him, they don't have to pay his vet bills or anything else. I don't mind the expense of stray/feral neuters, vaccinations, treatment, but I get so mad at people who don't take care of their own cats.

Meanwhile, Cotton has been diagnosed with renal failure, Roo's glucose went out of whack, my (new) bearded dragon won't eat his crickets, the SO is talking about Squeeky more than he usually does (no, we can't bring in another cat!), and I'm filing a restraining order on my other wacko neighbor!!

OMG - and on top of all that the weather up your way looks frightening. Hope all is OK

If you're allowed - what's the story with the restraining order? (PM me if you don't want to put it here)
