We're just about at the point where we're financially stable enough that I would feel comfortable taking care of another cat. I can afford vet treatment for Izzy with no problem, plus food and whatever else she needs, and the humans have all their needs taken care of as well. I have to double-check the lease on this apartment to make sure they allow multiple cats, but I'm 99% sure there's a two-cat limit, which would be perfect.
Anyway. Izzy is not the best at acclimating to other animals since she's been an only pet for the majority of her life. She eventually tolerated Tyler, the family black lab, but they were never cuddle buddies or anything. I think she would warm up to another cat better because there wouldn't be the size intimidation. I really think that's what bothered her the most... plus Tyler, even as an older dog, is very VERY exuberant... and his energy probably freaked her out.
So, that said... do you think I should look for kittens? A cat near her age (about 3 years old... man, can't believe I've had her that long!)? An older, calmer cat? I will most likely NOT go to a shelter around here since everything I've heard has said the shelters in the area do not take good care of their animals and are often quite sick. I'll either find a private rescue organization or look somewhere like craigslist where there are always tons of animals who need new homes for whatever reason.
Basically, knowing what we know of her temperament -- high energy, stand-offish, still pretty skittish -- what age and temperament should I look for in a playmate for her? Or would you recommend that I keep her as a single pet? I've never had multiple cats before so I'm not sure what sort of pairing would work best.

Unfortunately, there is no way to predict temperament, or how well two (or more) cats will get along. I also don't think it truly matters what age or gender you choose for the resident cat's companion.
I would also not avoid adopting from the local shelter, rumors are just that, rumors, and unless you see for yourself, you shouldn't go strictly on heresay. Thousands of cats and kittens in shelters await good homes, and more often than not, you can rescue said kitty FROM imminent danger, FROM illness, etc. The most important thing to do is once adopted, get adoptee IMMEDIATELY to your own vet for a thorough exam, testing for FELV/FIV, deworming, and vaccinations if not already given (before introducing to the resident cat), and scheduling a spay or neuter appt when applicable.
Then, of course, search the forums etc for introductions.

Town Lake facility - part of Austin Humane Society - has a VERY good reputation for providing healthy adoption pets.

I have been in recent contact with Sheila Smith at Shadow Cats, re a feral situation at my apartment complex. She is very nice, understanding and helpful; also told me they and other humane organizations are near the end of the spring/summer "kitten boom" and have so many cats up for adoption. Round Rock is close to you - you may want to email and get more details:

As you know, branch outlets of store chains often differ widely in quality and attitude. The PetsMart I deal with is the one at 12901 N I35 off the northbound service road in the shopping center between Parmer Lane and Howard Lane Austin 78753. I like their staff and they offer sound, viable cats from good homes. My Pinto (whose name was originally "Devon" lol) came from the little country town of Elgin a few miles east of here... this was the first time I ever adopted an adult cat, and I am well pleased with how he has turned out.

I agree with what Traci says regarding adopting a second cat - there is no way to be sure. .. However, my "hunch" for whatever it may be worth, is that an adult spayed female would be likely to "take to" a kitten (of weaned age, I think.) That would leave her as "Boss Cat" from the beginning... JMO.

Re: Izzy needs a playmate.
Yeah... I'm thinking that a kitten that's a few months to a year old might be best. That way Izzy would still be the boss lady, but if she DOES play rough, she won't do too much damage. I'll probably soft paw 'em both for a while before I know they like each other... even after they've been fully introduced.
Then again, we might be moving soon, so it might have to wait until we're relocated. Silly Army... wouldn't want to bring a new cat home just to move, though. I'll know more in a few weeks. I talked to the apartment complex here and they want another $200 deposit. Sigh. But it's not out of the question if I find the right animal.
