My white cat Xanth (April 1989 - October 2000) had brilliant green eyes. His body shape and personality traits made it obvious he had a lot of Siamese in him. He was smart, playful, very vocal... and stone deaf. As his vet explained it, deafness in such cats is a form of nerve deafness - all the mechanisms of the inner ear are there, but the nerve connections - through which these parts tell the brain what is heard - are missing. This is a genetic fluke related to pigmentation, wherein certain chromosomes are left out in the development of the embryo... All this is far too complex for my limited scientific education, but that is the gist of what I recall. Google et cetera no doubt could tell more, if one has time to look for it.
