Re: Urine Off

Am wondering if this is the same company that makes Cat-Off, Dog-Off and Skunk-Off. We used to carry these items at the clinic, we sold ALOT of the Skunk-Off.

It would be interesting to find out how well this works after a month or so of treating the areas. Do keep us updated.

If this works, I am really interested! $20 is a lot cheaper than replacing carpet. What kind of a store did you get it in? Available around the country? I guess I could google it...

Marty, Tambrey linked the site in her first post. On the site, there is a "where to buy" section.....just enter your zip or city/state to see what store is in your area.

A local carpet center sells it now, so it is alot closer by...I never did go get it after my original post...this last week is the first time I have used it..

I will let you know if it works long-term...I hope so...
and I have yet to try it on OLD stains in the entry hall hardwood floors...but they guarantee it to work on that too...

Traci - why did you caution her about the citrus emulsion? Isn't that lemon juice and why would it harm a cat (or dog)?

(They just had that Urine eliminator of QVC - they said it works because it 'eats' the urine salts which other things can't do))

Citrus extracts, oils and botanicals can cause toxicosis in cats (dogs as well)...particularly central nervous system depression. Other toxic effects include ataxia, hypothermia, hypotension, collapse and death. Mild symptoms may cause severe skin absorption reactions. Since so many citrus products contain other or inert ingredients, the toxicity rate increases.

So your saying that any product with lemon juice in it can cause toxicosis? And even lemon juice itself if an animal walked on it while wet? (or dry?)

(Actually- what is toxicosis?)

Not exactly. I'm referring to extracts, oils, botanicals, additives, crude oils, inert ingredients, solvents, that when used alone or when combined, can cause toxic effects similar to insecticide/pesticide poisoning. If you used plain old lemon juice from your local supermarket, it's unlikely to cause more than stomach upset or vomiting if a pet ingests it (don't quote me on that though), in excess, though, it probably wouldn't be good.

Oils, like essential oils or terpenes, aromatherapy oils and solvents etc can be deadly to cats, whether it is ingested orally, or absorbed through the skin. Dogs have been known to suffer the same effects, although cats are more susceptible.

You can see Just Say No for more info, keeping in mind this page is geared more to flea products, but citrus extracts etc are included.

Toxicosis is a term used to describe a severe physical toxic reaction to a poisonous substance.

I was going to post a link to a naturalist gardener, but thought better of it, as I wasn't sure of his ideas. He suggests mixing shredded orange peels in with the soil to deter cats. Well, they have oil in them, so would that be toxic also?

Marty - "citrus extracts" are usually oils from the peel, and in concentrated form, they can be very injurious. Ever get that on your fingers as you peeled an orange, then rubbed your eye? I have, and it isn't much fun!
