Re: Owie...my hand!

Well, I went to the clinic this morning and got some huge penicillin tablets...I have to cut them in half to swallow them!

The swelling is down, and not as red, but as I told the doctor, I do NOT want it getting worse over the weekend and me having to go the hospital instead.

It does not hurt near as much tonight, and swelling is way down, but it is still bruised and tender.

Yeah, I know that betadine and ointment will not stop an active infeciton...but after opening it up to let it drain (picking the scab off) I wanted to make sure it was clean, even though I did wash my hands before doing so...I am just kind of picky that way when it comes to wounds and such...after my dad being a volunteer firefighter and emt, and mom and dad both being red cross trainers, and me being an emt-first responder myself...and doing medication on horses when I worked at the ranch in Tucson...well, you should see my first aid kit...LOL...a red tackle box with 3 levels and dividers for various bandages and bandaids and butterfly closures and ointments and kits and tubes with tylenol and sudafed (I update them regularly so never expired in there)...plus old fashioned sanitary pads (the ones that do NOT wick the moisture away and are great for BIG wounds) a razor, bar of ivory soap (in its wrapper), veterinary self sticking wrap, ace bandages, one use ice packs, a flexible splint...alcohol wipes, anticeptic wipes, hand sanitizer, sterile water...some might call it a bit overboard, but I have used it all at one time or another and I know where it all is...

So anywyas....Penicillin is started in my body and I can bend my thumb tonight!

Hope it heals fast. Infections totally suck. I love your first aid box!

Karen, in pets, we do use betadyne to flush some types of infected wounds (but it depends on the wound and the circumstances). Of course, those patients are already on antibiotics and other wound treatment, but betadyne can be used as an antiseptic flush in some cases.

Triple antibiotic is also used for smaller wounds on face, head, limbs, etc as long as the wound is not deep, etc.

I know this is a human-related thread, and you're right, the triple-antibiotic topical isn't really affective for Tambrey's circumstance.

Glad to hear you got checked, Tambrey and initiated antibiotics, now get well soon!
