She is a beauy and reminds me alot of my Granny's cat Kiki (kee-kee), Kiki was so named because my cousin, who was very little at the time, couldn't say
"kitty" - she said kee-kee. Layla sounds like quite a character and lots of fun - congrats on your new addition.

PS - my brother's late wife had a cat named Layla when they married - her Layla turned out to be a "he", but the name stuck anyway.

I had a similar incident with my Sheltie "Cali".. She definitely was named "Miller" for the first few months of her life and my family is content on never letting me live that down! :P

I have to admit, as a long-time dog lover and sheltie-mom (I've had 6 shelties over the years and have 3 right now), I'm a bit confused as to how the gender of a sheltie puppy wasn't determined properly. Kittens can be much harder to figure out than puppies. Was your Cali biologically weird?

Thanks all for the kind words!

Layla has started to settle in nicely and has turned into quite the little love bug! She really likes to wedge herself in behind people on the couch or under the pillows.. or blankets on the bed.. or.. well you see where this is going! We have had to be extra careful when looking for her because she is soo tiny and fits pretty much anywhere! I found her sleeping in the crack of my arm this morning when I woke up for work.. She is soo small I never even felt her there lol! I have no problem with her climbing on the furniture, but we are going to have to try and trim those extra sharp baby nails because she likes to play "Cliff Hanger" on the back of the couch because she has to jump up to the highest part to get up! She has also started purring finally and she sounds just like a lawnmower! SOOO LOUD but sooooooo cute at the same time! She has not swatted at Cali anymore, but has taken ownership of all of the dog toys so Cali is on high alert! Kitty grass has turned into the new delicacy in the house for both the dog and the cat! I never in a million years thought either of them would eat it because Baxter refused to touch it but they are both laying peacefully next to it chomping away right now! I am going to try and get lots of pictures updated soon so thanks again everyone!

Hahaha it was all my fault! Before Cali I had not owned a dog in close to 20 years since I was a child. She was a rescue pup and I was told she was a he and went with it. She is a big ham and loves laying on her back to have her belly rubbed and that is when my roommate at the time actually noticed it. He said "um.. I hate to break this to you, but I am pretty sure Miller is not going to be an appropriate name for this puppy.." LOL It was about a week before her first vet visit with me and it was a little awkward to explain to the vet as well :P

Well, regardless of whether Cali was a "he" or a "she", as long as she's loved and happy, that's all that matters. Have you posted any pictures of her? If you did, I think I might have missed them. I do love shelties - my story is this - I fell in love with Lassie when I was about 5 years old and wanted a Collie from that point on. When I was in 7th grade, I found out about "miniature collies", AKA shelties, and wanted one at least as much as I wanted a Lassie. I finally got my first sheltie (Leah) in 1975 when I was between my junior and senior years in college and have had at least one since then. As I mentioned earlier, I currently have 3 - Allie (my deaf girl - almost 13), Foxy (10) and Dylan (3).

Don't feel bad, Mike, I thought my Mecchi kitty was a girl, and so did my vet! HA HA HA! I was calling "her" Maggie, until I pointed out to the vet that she was anatomically strange, hence the name Mecchi

I don't have a whole lot online right now but I do have a few.. this is one of my favorites of Cali and my Baxter R.I.P. They were the best of friends and he is very very missed!

A couple more of her pics from a few years back are in this album: http://s815.photobucket.com/albums/zz75 ... 0-%20Misc/

I would really love to have another one to run with her one day! The new kitten just does not like being herded around the house! :P
