true...but in small towns that do not have the funding to get all of the equipment, then they do what they can and have to choose which equipment over another...last major one they chose was an MRI machine since they have access to an x-ray machine...
They do not charge alot here...most people do not have alot of $$$ so they keep rates down so pets can get the basic care...which in turn does not turn a big profit for the clinic....for example...neuter is $65...spay is $75....bloodwork is $35...overnight stays are $10 a night...
If it is a major emergency, I will go to the hospital in the city...but there I need to pay in full before services...sometimes I just do not have it...no matter what...and at the local clinic...I can make payments or we barter for other services...
At least they do have an MRI now...and they do bloodwork now onsite and before any anesthesia is administered...unless the owner signs the waiver not to...
What a Weekend
Re: What a Weekend
Tambrey, you might not have a choice sometimes, but the fact is both clinics are doing wrong by pets and their owners. Both in costs, and by combining human/animal equipment. It is against health regulations for the latter.
If this indeed has been going on, I'd suspect the health department is skirting issues with the county authorities. Which is also wrong.
The vet now has an MRI machine but not an xray, am I understanding that correctly? The vet/owner definitely does not have priorities in order, since an xray machine will net him a hell of alot more than an MRI machine. It's basic economics and ethical considerations, and if this is how he operates, it's no wonder he can't afford anything.
Btw, vets have to buy their own equipment, xray machines, ultrasounds, etc can most often be bought used from local hospitals, the vet can also check classifieds in any number of his journals. If the clinic owner has associates, he is doing them (not to mention the pets and clients!) a disservice by not providing them necessary diagnostic tools.
None of this is your fault, I'm just venting, I hope this vet gets his priorities straight some day soon.

..........Traci
Re: What a Weekend
I know Traci.....it is frustrating for me in so many ways as well.....
I got a text message today that Armando is doing very well...feeling more at ease with them, and she asked again when he has to go back for his follow-up...I asked for pictures
On another note....another very small kitten we had here...4 months and still sits in the palm of your hand.....I have been worried about him with the coming winter....Well.....today both the guy who boards horses here and a retired veterinary friend of ours stopped by...the one with horses to check on them and let us know he will take them home to the barn for the winter this week...and the retired vet because he needs a bunch of laptop computers loaded to take to their next mission trip to Nigeria...
We were standing out there talking and of course cats were rolling at feet....I said he can take one home and he laughed and said no way! Then this little itty bitty mouthy yellow one came running down the sidewalk and up to me....I picked it up and showed him and said I needed to take it in today for a check and meds...we got home lastnight and it had a snotty eye and today it was stuck shut and a bit of gunky nose as well...
I just stood there holding it and petting it while we talked and said it is hard to believe he is 4 months old...and I am worried about him this coming winter because I know he cannot survive...the vet looked at him and said no he won't...and handed him back...
About 30 seconds later he reached back out and said, "Give me that thing! I am taking it home to V and we'll see you for lunch!" And he put it in his truck and drove off...
We met for lunch then went to their house...the kitten was in a carrier (open door) in the basement room for now, since they have a deaf white cat who is very jealous and a rescued puppy mill mother dog who is very skittish and a mammas boy....
It had eaten...from a small miniature Christmas tree candy dish because she could not find anything else to put food in for it that it could reach over...had played in the litterbox (cardboard soda flat) but not done anything yet...
She took it upstairs and it sat on her lap..her chest...her shoulder...the chair behind he head...then finally came down and fell asleep on her leg...after an hour or so it got whiny so she took it downstairs with a bit more food and put it in the litterbox...it used the box and she left it eating in the room...
They had taken it to the local vet to get an antibiotic shot for the oncoming URI and earmite medicine and he cleaned its ears well...they will be going on vacation this next week, so he also got a dose of first round kitten shots and deworming meds to give it while they gone, after it is feeling better from the URI...It will go in their travel home with them, and the other cat and dog, for a month down south..
She is working on introductions but said it will stay in the carrier at night (in the travel home) or when they have to leave for its own safety for now...
One less for me to worry about this winter...
