Joe went to the Vet today

He estimates him to be around 2, weighs 40 lb, not microchipped, and amazingly heartworm negative! So now I can give him HW meds. I called all the Vet clinics in the area, and some were able to research whether they had done a neuter on a dog fitting this description, and some were not. and the one closest to the area where he was found, said they needed a rabies tag# or an owner's name (if I knew that, I wouldn't be calling them!). AC has no inquiries since Jan. The newspaper on-line only goes back 7 days...I have old papers back 2 months and haven't come across anything. I wonder...old newspapers are on microfilm at the library in Macon (45 min from here)...wonder if I called...would they do it for me (I don't think my back will get me there right now). Anyway, Joe continues to be the sweetest guy that I have ever seen. I am detecting a little bit of separation anxiety, but, right now, I don't blame him! Even the Vet said...this guy is somebody's pet...and now a plug for microchipping.............there is only so much I can do.

...he's healthy and heartworm-negative! I wonder if he wandered quite a ways, following his nose. Mr. Blue is microchipped, and there are tags on his collar. Anything to help, in case he gets out again and follows that nose of his!

They are thinking of passing an ordinance requiring all dogs and cats to be microchipped in the Parish. They will be able to get the chipping done at the Shelter for a one time fee of $12 to $15. (Not counting dog owner transfers. New owners will be required to have the dog re-registered in thier name for about $10 - $13.)

Vets will also microchip at a price of about $25. ....

It is disturbing to not be able to find the owner, as I doubt he was dumped. Around here they don't even require a dog to be licensed, so the only identification is chipping or a rabies tag...

When I moved, I called the microchip people to give them my new address. They only had records on one dog. Guess my vet forgot to send in the info.... Now I'm out of the will again. Currently only 2 out of three dogs are microchipped. My Vet up here in MA said they don't use the scanners so it's a waste of time.

my dogs are not chipped either, but 10 years ago, I was told that scanners are rare. Now that my Vet has one, any future dog will be chipped!

unless i'm mistaking willess one, the vet does not sent the chip number in, but it is up to the client to send and register, or at least it was when i was chipping....

on another board about this-a man lost his dog after a move, and never updated the info. He found his dog traveling in the foster's car. I would not think a Vet would be responsible for keeping the info up-to-date....that is unreasonable.

Davet is correct, it is up to the owner to register the information. The vet uses a copy of the chip number and keeps it on file, but he is not responsible for updating any information, the records simply indicate the date of microchipping, and the identification number. Then the staff give the pertinent info to the owner, who is then responsible thereafter.

Scanner use is spotty. When things get real hectic, they sometimes will only scan the Purebreds. The thinking being that most people will not microchip a mixed breed dog. In our case they would be wrong. I would be awfully P*****D if they took my dog in a shelter and then put it down without scanning first.
