my former sister-in-law worked for a zoo in Tucson from the time she was 16 until she retired...for many of the years she was the dietician...mixing up the food for every animal every day, or supervising for others...every animal at the zoo has a name and a food dish and specific recipe for its meals....it was actually quite interesting...
But she did start out mucking the cages, as they had way back then...now they have these really neat natural habitats...
I had other friends at that zoo who worked with the different animals...one woman worked with the elephants her entire career there...they loved her...she wold put carrots in her back pockets and they would wrap their trunks around her, pretending to give her a hug, but actually fishing those carrots out (that she put there for that reason!)....
At the end of the day, she would go sit beside their pond and take off her boots...two of them would come up and begin to massage her feet and legs with their trunks...but of course, she had been with them since they were babies first brought there and they knew her well...she was like Mom to them...
But....there are dangers as well as they are still wild animals...another friend there was mauled by the male polar bear when she went to clean his area...she thought that the door was latched and locked in the holding pen, but it was not...she suffered greatly and was disfigured to a great extent, with many surgeries...but she went back to work, with the bears and said to leave him alone and not put him down...he was only protecting his territory and it was her mistake for not double checking the locks before she went in...
Good luck in whatever you decide to do...I know you will do well...

Re: Animals Job
There are certain veterinary hospitals and clinics that will NOT put an animal down for 'convenience'. Meaning, if someone is bored, doesn't want the animal peeing on the couch, ect, they will not put the animal down. They will find other ways in order to find the animal a home, like a local 'no-kill' shelter and things of that sort.
