Well, I may very well have a foster in about 2 weeks from Race The Wind (the adoption kennels next to the greyhound track in Wichita). Normally RTW doesn't put hounds in foster homes, but occasionally they have a 'project dog' where they make exceptions. Not only do they take in retired racers, but also hounds in need of homes for whatever reasons. This beautiful 75 pound boy has been at the kennels for 2 1/2 years now. He was originally spotted running loose about 5 miles west of Wichita, and ended up about 10 miles west of Wichita. A local couple tried to catch him for almost two weeks, but he was such a spook, they had no success. Animal control finally caught him and RTW was called and they took him in. That in itself is amazing as most greyhounds running loose usually meet a sad fate within a few short hours as they chase anything small and are often hit by cars. They have no brakes once they start running. He is truly a survivor, and was loose at least 2 1/2 weeks on his own. He is so shy he usually hunkers at the back of his kennel when potential adopters come to look at the hounds, so understandably, he's not 'presenting well' for the folks who can't see past the shyness. His background was tracked through ear tattoos to his sire/dam, never raced, but that's all they know. How he ended up loose and what his life consisted of prior to that other than a birthdate listed through greyhound data information will forever remain a mystery. He was born in April of 2001. Because he is considered a 'project' dog, and they do make exceptions for dogs like that, Annie, who runs the kennels, is going to do her best the next few days to pull some strings and get the higher ups to let me foster this lovely boy. I am going to visit him this Sunday for some one on one time. I must say, when I was out there to visit the kennels a couple of weekends ago, although he would not come out of his kennel to see me, he did allow me to sit inside and stroke his head and ears without him hunkering. Lord knows, Skittle has given me 3 years of valuable experience and learning in how to work with a shy dog. Sooooo, if the stars are in alignment, and God is willing, Randy will be at my house before too long!

That is really, really super great! He is beautiful - that sweet Greyhound face - and truly almost a miracle he survived out on his own. The RTW must understand that if anyone can succeed in rehabbing this guy, it would be you. Tell more as you go along - we'll be eagerly awaiting news!
