Hey there,
I've had my female cat almost 10 years. She's fairly old now. But I've always gotten along with her. She purrs when I pet her and meows for treats. She only likes me and my mother -- but especially me. But all of a sudden she has turned. Suddenly she hisses when she seems me and swipes at my hands causing all sorts of scratches -- it's like my smell, as soon as she smells my hand or feet she just turns and starts hissing. Whenever I'm around suddenly she will run to a corner and curl up to herself. She also sometimes runs under the couch and waits for me to leave. I have no idea what I've done! I haven't done anything I know to hurt her! She was my cat and she's turned completely on me! She hates me! I can't think of what it may have been. It all seemed to happen a couple weeks ago, I was coming up the stairs and tripped on the top step. I fell and my plate and glass fell on the kitchen floor and glass fell everywhere. I yelped and yelped as my knee hurt for a bit. I went over to her couch hoping she would comfort me. She didn't really do anything and I kept murmering as I'm hurt. It seems this is where it all started. I didn't really do anything other than make a loud noise. After in order to get my grips as it was fairly painful, I left the broken glass for a bit. There was food mixed in with the broken glass. I cleaned it up shortly after but she was instantly hissing at me after. Could it be the fact that I fell and made a loud noise? Or was it that I left some food perhaps she touched it and hurt herself? I'm really not sure what I could have done to change my pet relationship completely from the favorite person of the cat, to the most hated! I've had soo many good years with the cat! What happened?! The only other thing I can think of is that I bought a new cat house (from Walmart) and she wasn't too fond of it at first -- it also had catnip treatement -- not sure maybe she doesn't like catnip or it messed her brain up? I have gotten rid of it just in case.
Please help me get my cat back to normal! I am starting to be depressed as I cannot even pet her anymore! She helps me calm down and stuff.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
I know it is very unsettling when we see such a change in our most loved furbabies behavior. One thought that comes to mind is that she may have incurred an injury or she may have an undetected health problem.. When was the last time you took her to the vet. When cats turn 7 years old it's a good idea to have a full bloodwork panel done. If this were my cat, I'd take her to the vet based on the behavior she has been exhibiting.
It's always a good idea to try to keep the environment as stress free as possible. Has there been other changes at home that shge may be reacting to?

But she's completely normal when I'm not around. My mom can pet her, she's purring and meowing. Just when I come by she runs away into a corner. If it was some sort of health problem, why would she exhibit wierd behavior to me and not to others?

It could very well be a behavioral issue in relation to your accident/incident and she's still associating the trauma with seeing you. I know it's heartbreaking, but don't force yourself on her. Sit quietly in the middle of the floor and let her come to you. Have a few of her favorite cat toys around, tossing them yourself to entice her to play with you. If it is because of your fall, the memory of it will eventually wear off. In the meantime, be calm and soothing so she can know you're okay.
I'm in agreement with Lisa asking when her last vet exam was, how did she do overall, has she had a geriatric bloodwork profile done? It could be something medically underlying that perhaps she associates her pain with yours from the fall. Best to have her examined fully if you haven't done recently.

Get a checkup by your doctor. You could have some condiction, which changes body chemistry and ordor. This could make your cat think you are a strange imposter and explain the strange behavior.

Good call, Skeptic...I did not think of that...and I was just reading an article the other day about a woman who had a seizure trained Rotweiller for her eplipsy...the dog can smell chemical changes within her body when she is going to have a seizure, and guides her to a safe place...and in this one instance...even dialed a speed dial 911, watched at the window for the ambulance, unlocked the front door, and led them to the kitchen where she was at...
But they say other slight chemical changes in our bodies are detected by our pets...and I rememeber at an EMT training with police dogs...their sense of smell is something like 10,000 more sensitive than ours...they can smell the chemical breakdown of certain drugs and such...
I did also have a military trained border collie many years ago, trained to sense danger by smell...and she did her job too...if I was in a fearful situation...one day a man I did not like got too close...I did not move as far as I knew, or give any commands, but she was up between him and me with her hackles up, ready to attack if I did give the word...I guess she sensed that little change in my body when I had that twingel fo fear when he got too close...
Many things can go wrong within our body that we are not aware of, but our pets may be...yes.,..go get a complete physical and bloodwork...and mention to your doctor about your cat's sudden change in behavior towards you...
