A small taste of chocolate icecream probably won't hurt a canine, it is mainly the theobromine and caffeine in baker's chocolate, milk chocolate/semi-sweet chocolate in large amounts that can be toxic to both cats and dogs. By toxic, this means that NO chocolate should ever be given to cats ever....for dogs, a lethal dose could be anywhere from 100-200 mg per lb of body weight, depending on the type of chocolate and amount ingested. Example, 1/4 oz of baking chocolate or 2 oz of milk chocolate per lb of body weight could be lethal. Bottom line, don't take risks, keep chocolate and other candies/sweets away from your pets.
