Heartbreaker pic
Biscotti is so-o-o afraid of thunderstorms, I fear a heart attack some day. We had one an hour ago....usually she hides in a corner of the bathroom, but today, for some reason, she stayed in the living room, where I was on the computer. She wormed herself into a corner with the wall on one side and the grandfather clock on the other side. I had to get up to make sure she was still alive!

Poor Biscotti! Mickey was terribly afraid of thunderstorms too. He would hide in the laundry room - the only room that doesn't have any windows. The only good thing I could find with his loss of hearing that came as he aged was that after he could no longer hear them, he quit being afraid. I miss him terribly, but I know he wouldn't have done well during the hurricane if he was still with us.
That's a precious picture. I wish I had some advice for you. At least the thunderstorms do go away.

AWWW! That is so sweet - darling picture - but maddening too, right? Poor babies... I had the same thing today, except it was a huge German shepherd crammed into a teeny little space between storage containers in a stair closet... Second time in 36 hours! I keep forgetting.... Today, I opened the little closet door to look for the rubber mallet (son was putting my new "ergonomic" desk chair together in another room) and I thought Winnie was either with him or upstairs - suddenly yet another lake squall gave a roll of thunder and ... swoosh!... here's moose dog out of nowhere crunched into the back side of the closet among old dustmops, yardsticks, curtain rods, rolls of outdated wrapping paper and a couple of homemade Mardi Gras door wreaths...
This time she did come out for supper, so I could brace the closet door shut. BTW... your picture reminds me: how is Biscotti doing now re the mealtime behavior? (When there aren't any T storms, that is...) ?

Well, it's good to know that even big dogs can be sissies! I really shouldn't say that, because I know there is a good reason why some dogs act like that! With Bisc, I think it is the pressure change, as she knows when a storm is coming before there is any noise.
Her mealtime is the same....I put yogurt or cottage cheese on top, and she still gives me a death look! She's missed a few meals and still doesn't learn. Must be another attention getting device....I'm going to try adding some canned food to see if that helps...but then the other dogs might act up. We'll see what happens.

Dottie, the dalmatian does the same thing. She will go to a corner of the room we are in and face into it.

I felt the same way when Heineken, our Husky/GSD, lost his hearing. Poor old man used to get so worked up during thunderstorms, fireworks, etc, that we were afraid he'd have a heartattack.k9Karen wrote:... Mick does the same thing as Biscotti- crams himself into the bathroom. His chosen spot is between the toilet and tub. I didn't think there was enough room for a Beagle there, let alone a 70+ pound Lab mix! Rescue Remedy seems to help when the storms are bad. Mick actually comes looking for it, and sighs when I'm done (I put 4 drops on the underside of his ear). Fourth of July I just put it in his water dish so he had it all day.

It must be a beagle thing...our Oliver gets behind any piece of furniture he can...the closer it is to the wall, the better!!
He hates anything shiny...even to the extent that oen afternoon he was howling at apparently nothing...I finally figured it out...the sun was shining in the window, casting a glare on a magazine on the side table, which in turn cast a reflection on the ceiling...he did not like it...so I had to have a bit of fun...I moved the magazine just enough to move the reflection on the ceiling, making him jump and howl all the more...
We had an awful storm a few nights back...hail and high winds and everything...LOTS of awesome light shows and house shattering booms...he was a total basketcase...I ended up putting his leash on him and wrapping it around my foot, making him sit at my feet while I pet him to keep him calm...elsewise he was getting into places he could nt get back out of and we would have to move furniture to lift him out!!
Oliver does not even like having his picture taken...the flash scares him and he even sees the camera and runs to hide!!

Athena is afraid of thunder storms, too. During the last big thunder boomer she got stuck under the supportring brace of a big oak desk. At 10:00PM a neighbor came over to lift the dest so I could get her out.

Marty- she is sooo sweet- poor thing. Honey has same prob. - looks for a place to hide - sometimes behind the couch. I should try Rescue Remedy.

Awww, poor doggy. While that picture is cute, I do feel sorry for Biscotti. I myself have never owned a pet that didn't like thunderstorms; my 3 cats love to watch the rain and lightning and don't mind thunder one bit; neither does my dog.
But my aun't dog Stinker used to be so terrified of thunder that when she heard it she would pee and poop all over the house, even if she had just come inside from a walk. Thankfully my aunt had hard wood floors.
*sigh* I miss Stinker; she was such a sweet dog; she never barked or howled or snapped; she was a big sweetie.
